CHAPTER 72

WEDNESDAY'S POV

After visiting the Sink, we started our plan to fight Y/N's mother and get rid of her conscience. The plan was to take turns every night to keep her company, one night I would be with her, another Sadie, another Maddie and another Brooke. It was not the smartest plan considering the feelings of some and the little self-control that my cousin had. What if she suddenly freaked out and decide to kill someone? If that had to happen, I just hoped it would happen during my shift.

Thanks to the sleepless nights, the attacks around the city faded away and the police assumed that the wild animal had fled or had simply been "shot down". They could not have been more wrong, although the culprit had stopped her attacks she was still considered dangerous. According to Sadie's father, we would know that we had achieved it the moment Y/N stopped reflecting next to her mother and the mark on the back of her neck disappeared.

The most difficult part of the process was making sure that Y/N didn't fall asleep, and for that we had to resort to different activities, none of them pleasant. Sadie took Y/N out partying and made sure to keep her active through alcohol and music, Brooke kept her awake through hoses in the garden so that her body would fight the cold, Maddie started by giving her coffee and ended up giving her other substances with her drink. For my part, I used to torture her with different cuts to force her body to heal, that made Y/N unable to fall asleep.

The human record of enduring without sleep was eleven days, although from the third day it was already considered a deadly activity. Since Y/N could not be compared to humans, I set myself the difficult task of documenting each and every day and side effects that were appearing in her. She had less and less energy, looked worse, had started to lose weight and her grades had dropped considerably as well. About a month and a half passed and Y/N was still sleepless, it was amazing the endurance of a kitsune's body.

- Enid: Please don't go on - she said with tears in her eyes - I appreciate that you call me every day to inform me about Y/N's condition, but it's too hard to hear that she is self-destructing with the passage of time - she sighed - The pain she feels is so strong that I notice it constantly through the link.

-Wednesday: I never thought I would say this, but the torture she is undergoing is too cruel - I admitted - I thought that with a couple of days we would get it, however her mother's conscience is too strong.

- Enid: Can I see her? - she asked me with a serious countenance.

-Wednesday: Y/N is not herself at the moment. Are you sure?

At the insistence of my best friend I had no choice but to focus the mobile camera towards Y/N who was crucified on the wall of our room. I could hear sobs from the other side of the screen so I refocused on myself and sighed when I saw Enid's sadness reflected on the face.

-Wednesday: We will go on a field trip with the school, we will spend a few days outside of New Jersey - I announced - I will try to convince the teachers that we should go near California.

- Enid: Do you think they would allow an excursion to the other side of the country? - she wiped her tears away.

-Wednesday: We have to try, Y/N is really tired... Seeing you could give her encouragement to keep fighting against herself - I rolled my eyes - It's not that she believes in nonsense like "the power of love", but it's proven that the greatest crazy things are done for love. If Y/N sees you, she might be demented enough to stay awake longer.

-Enid: - she nodded - I will talk to my parents so that they will let me mobilize and go to her - she said convinced.

Y/N'S POV

I had no idea where we were going with the school bus, I also didn't know what day we were meeting. I had spent so much time awake, without any rest, that it was already difficult for me to distinguish between night and day. Where had the white snow gone? At what point had green leaves started sprouting again? I hadn't even noticed the change of season, I felt totally lost.

-Sadie: I was looking forward to going on a hike - she smiled next to me as she passed me a thermos - I've brought coffee. Do you want some?

-Y/N: - I nodded and took the thermos - Thanks, Sink.

I dedicated myself to looking through the window to distract myself and try not to give in to the sleep that the rocking of the vehicle caused me. Sadie took it upon herself to keep me awake by telling me jokes, sharing her music and talking to me about how desperate she was to get a date with Millie. How long has it been since my last appointment? Months? How long has it been in general since I last saw Enid? Oh, Enid... The tranquility that caused me to think about her made my heavy eyelids close unintentionally.

- Sadie: Y/N! - she pushed me - You can't fall asleep, come on you're doing great.

-Y/N: Sorry, sorry - I yawned - Do you have more coffee?

- Sadie: You've drunk two whole thermos flasks so far on our trip... - she sighed and looked at Maddie - Do you want me to pour some magic powder on her?

-Y/N: Do anything to keep me from falling asleep - I sighed.

- Sadie: - nodded - I'll ask Maddie, just a moment.

After drinking the coffee I was able to stay a few hours more fully awake, so I was completely conscious when we crossed the sign that said "Welcome to Washington". What were we doing in the capital? I rolled my eyes as I saw our history teacher unusually excited by our sight. What was interesting about that place? I growled slightly as we took a corner and Sadie rolled over on top of me. I pushed her off and soon after the bus parked.

-Y/N: Have we arrived yet?

-Sadie: We will stay in this hotel - she said pointing to a building through the window - Don't worry, I will be your roomie myself - she smiled - My father has also come as an assistant professor, so there will be no suspicion if he comes into our room at night.

-Y/N: It makes sense - I looked up Wednesday - Where is my cousin?

-Brooke: Someone has called her on the phone - she took her backpack - We will have to take her suitcase for her.

- Sadie: Hey Brooke, just in case you're interested... Should we change rooms? - she smirked - I found out that you will sleep in the same room as Millie, I have Y/N as a companion, so - I elbowed her - Ouch! Okay, take it easy... I was just kidding, I'll be with you all week, don't worry.

A week away from New Jersey made me feel anxious because I still hadn't managed to get rid of my mother's consciousness. What if she possessed me at night and decided to vandalize the Capitol or something? It would be on the news! I took my suitcase and Wednesday's and started walking next to Sadie towards the hotel reception. I was just asking fate to be able to control me during the excursion and for no one to get hurt.
