Chapter 82: Frustrating Consultant

The "coup" happening in Asgard was clearly not something Oaks should be concerned about at the moment.

Bifrost was destroyed by Thor's own hands, and without the Space Stone, they couldn't repair it.

With Asgard entering a period of war, the destruction of Bifrost cut off communication between the Nine Realms, causing the various realms to fall into internal strife or become targets of external threats, giving them a headache.

"To be honest, those Asgardians do have the capital to be called 'gods'—at least in ancient times."

As a somewhat successful contact with extraterrestrial civilizations, Nick Fury, the director of S.H.I.E.L.D., naturally needed to listen to the on-site report.

Due to the unusual nature of the incident, in addition to the on-site report by the person in charge, Coulson, the two "prospective Avengers" "Environmental Consultant" Oaks and Banner, were also in his office.

Now Nick Fury held in his hand the incident report prepared by Coulson, as well as a large number of on-site photos and data sheets.

"Although that 'god' said he would be Midgard—our friend.

But as you all know, I never place my hopes on a stranger, especially one who is an alien."

"Yes, sir. But under the circumstances, we can only strive for this outcome as cautiously as possible."

Coulson's face no longer had its usual smile. This incident gave him a feeling of being out of control from start to finish.

"If it weren't for Consultant Oaks's sound advice, I really can't imagine what kind of situation we would be facing if we caused any trouble for the heir to Asgard."

"You were intimidated by their power, Coulson."

Oaks picked up the S.H.I.E.L.D.-provided coffee on the table, took a sniff, and decisively put it down, causing Nick Fury to glare at him.

"But they are also humans, not real gods. They also have 'humanity'... to put it bluntly, using 'humanity' to your advantage is your specialty."

"That's why I don't like these agents who seem to have countless faces."

Dr. Banner set down his coffee cup and curled his lips.

"When they were chasing after me, they used all sorts of means... They were omnipresent, and they truly displayed the use of 'humanity' to the fullest extent."

"Cough... that was necessary for the mission."

Nick Fury clearly felt a bit awkward in front of Banner, the victim, but it was just a tiny bit.

"I'll take that as a compliment, Mr. Consultant... Now you know that I'm not being overly paranoid, right?"

Oaks knew he was referring to the Avengers Initiative.

"Asgard is a nation that practices monarchy, and they generally don't reveal themselves too much unless someone threatens them... At least for now, Earth doesn't have that qualification, so they shouldn't treat Earth too harshly."

Moreover, it's not up to them to be too harsh. The existence of the Supreme Sorcerer, Odin couldn't possibly be unaware.

"What are your thoughts on Asgardian technology, Dr. Banner?"

Bruce Banner, along with the Hulk, was now a prospective Avenger, and Nick Fury's Project of the weaponization of the Tesseract would not be something the Avengers wanted to see, especially Tony and Banner.

As for Oaks... Although he seemed to be more rational, his relationship with the other two told him that it was the same as them knowing.

At the same time, offending these three, even for S.H.I.E.L.D., needed to be carefully considered.

Nick Fury didn't want to see the team he had painstakingly built split apart before it even had a chance to be effective.

So he couldn't invite Banner and Tony to study the Tesseract.

But as for Asgard's weapons, Banner currently had more say in the matter.

"It's... very peculiar material."

Banner pondered for a moment before slowly voicing his discovery.

"Thor's hammer and the armor known as the 'Destroyer' seem to be made of the same material. This material reacts to the kind of energy they call 'magic.'"

He scratched his head.

"Thor himself has said that in Asgard, technology and magic are the same thing. Magic is just a more abstract form of technology that we still don't understand.

But if we say that the power contained in Mjolnir leans more towards magic, then the power of the Destroyer's armor is closer to the known technological side.

In other words, if we can further analyze the Destroyer's armor, perhaps we can catch a glimpse of Asgard's magical technology."

At this point, Banner furrowed his brow.

"However, that will take a long time. Analyzing an alien civilization that we don't fully understand is not an easy task."

"S.H.I.E.L.D. also has a research department, and they will assist you, Dr. Banner."

Nick Fury glanced at Coulson, and the latter blinked slightly, moving his lips, but still nodded without changing his expression.

"Yes, Director, I will handle this matter."

Oaks furrowed his brow, and Fury and Coulson's unusual behavior didn't escape his notice.

"If you're thinking about analyzing the Destroyer's technology to create weapons, then we need to have a serious talk about this."

Damn it, fooling around with the Space Stone and attracting the attention of the Chitauri isn't enough, but if you try to use Banner for something like this, do you believe the Avengers won't turn against him?

"Weapons?! Are you really thinking about that?!"

Banner stood up abruptly.

"..."

Nick Fury pressed both hands to his forehead, elbows on the table, and rubbed his bald head, feeling an excruciating toothache.

This Consultant, when he's easy to deal with, he's really easy, but when he's not, why is he so frustrating!

I didn't ask for your help with the research again!

"We need effective countermeasures when we encounter the Asgardians again, and these countermeasures include but are not limited to weapons."

He could only try to explain:

"Analyzing the Destroyer's technology will provide us with much more than just weapons."

"That's why I said, S.H.I.E.L.D., you only know how to use violence to solve problems."

Oaks made a "I believed in your nonsense" expression and waved his hand.

"In other words, weapon development is still necessary. I understand that you were shocked by the power of the Asgardians, and it's true that your own strength is the fundamental solution, but how can you ensure that what you develop won't be used against humanity itself?"

"... Many of the things we develop will not be used against humanity itself."

Nick Fury spread his hands. "Otherwise, the world would have gone to chaos long ago."

"Here's the deal. Dr. Banner won't be involved in your research. We only need a portion of the Destroyer's wreckage."

Oaks looked at the still-excited Banner.

"Dr. Banner, how you handle the research results is up to you. We can't change S.H.I.E.L.D.'s intentions, but you can still do your part."

"... Fine."

Banner remained silent for a moment and finally sighed. The will of S.H.I.E.L.D. was something he couldn't shake.

"I haven't agreed yet!"

Nick Fury felt completely ignored.

Are you the director of S.H.I.E.L.D. or am I the director of S.H.I.E.L.D.?!

"Or you can give up all rights to the Destroyer—that thing was defeated by the two of us and the Asgardians, and the consultancy service to you was unpaid."

"... Another deal? Fine, I understand."
