“Good news: we’re officially back on track, pun only slightly intended,” Reesa said.

Looking up from the makeshift desk he'd made of their dining table, Myko spared a brief smile of acknowledgment. Then, he looked back down, his focus on the screen in front of him.

Reesa looked down as well to revisit her tablet. Switching from the window that followed their first-class Amtrak ride to the program that contained Myko’s schedule, she homed in on the next day’s ten o’clock time slot.

Childlike excitement filled her at seeing appointment details for Dominique Boudreaux, the third-generation namesake of Dominique’s Kitchen. Some of her earliest memories involved watching the first Dominique cook on television, while she and her paternal grandmother, Mama Estelle, followed along with the recipes.
