Chapter 16: Curiouser and Curiouser

“I’m sorry for my cousin,” Myko told Reesa. He spoke quietly so Cora wouldn’t overhear.

Reesa looked at the figure walking ahead of them. Myko’s watch had gone off with an alarm that signaled the need to return to the main house. The diversion came just in time to save her from answering Cora's question.

“I understand if it’s hard to ignore what she said, but you don’t have to pry for us,” he assured her.

She looked at the ground. “It’s my job to help.”

“Fishing for information about my family would bother you. As your friend, I can’t forget that.”

“But as my boss?”

He sighed. “As someone with a significant stake in this, the idea is tempting. Please wait.”

Reesa stopped a few paces from the door that Cora had already gone through.

“I'd be lying if I said I didn’t see the potential of your involvement,” Myko admitted. “But should something go wrong, I worry about the impact on both our relationships.”

Reesa rubbed her arms.

“You have the same concerns, don’t you?”
