Chapter 26: Omen

“How long will you be gone?”

Reesa, hearing the sadness in Cora’s question to Harper, couldn’t help but feel impatient for her friend’s return too. Out of everyone in the living room of Casa Sartori, Cora was the only one who didn’t know Harper had plans for their first official date when they returned from visiting their grandparents.

“Until the 18th,” Harper said and tucked errant strands of hair behind Cora’s ear.

“That seems so long. I’ve gotten used to seeing you every day.”

“I know, but I’ll be back before you know it. I wish you could come. They really want to meet you.”

“Well, it’s your fault I can’t go,” Cora said. She placed a hand on their arm. “You’ve done your job too well. The bakery’s slammed with orders.”

Harper grinned. “I told you I’d deliver.”

“You certainly did,” Cora said. Her hand slid from their arm to their fingers, which she held gently.

Myko looked up from his desk. “Be still my beating heart.”
