Benji was a little confused. Ginger had just asked him if he knew about mates and she looked terrified. She leaned away from him in her seat, her eyes were wide with worry, and some color had left her cheeks. 


“I’ve heard it mentioned in my research,” he said slowly, not wanting to frighten her more. “Nothing was clear about what it meant.”


“Right.” She stared at her stuffed mushrooms. “All shifters have a mate, you see. We don’t know why it happens – it just does. Some believe it makes you a stronger, more passionate wolf. Other say mates produce genetically superior children or some crap.”


“Go on.” Benji leaned closer to her, interested in hearing new facts. 


“For the longest time,” Ginger whispered, “we thought shifters could only be mates with other shifters. After all, only a shifter knows what finding their mate feels like. But then Rowan met Ylana.”


“How did that end up working out?” Benji asked.
