The Dæd-Câd villa was a basic Chinese house with four wings and a courtyard smacked in the middle of it. Grandfather had bought the already dilapidated and falling apart house and land from a bankrupt family with every penny he had. At that time, the area where the house was located was considered to be out of the way, so the land came cheap.
