I don't believe it!
Sang Wan looked up at him, her eyes brimming with those two words. "Really?"
"Of course it's true!" Shi Fengju nodded seriously, sighing lightly, "These years have not been easy for you, have they?"
Sang Wan was stunned for a moment, then shook her head, "My eldest brother, sister-in-law, and second brother have all been very good to me! I don't care about other idle gossips." Mess with Auntie unless you think your life is too long!
Shi Fengju smiled and said suddenly, "I mean it, actually, you underestimate me... Cousin's father, my uncle, compared to your second uncle, hehe!"
Sang Wan raised her eyebrows in surprise, Gu Fangzi's father? She only knew that Gu Fangzi's mother, her mother-in-law's own sister, had passed away, and she really had no recollection about her father.
"So, rest assured, no one will talk about today's matter after you go back."
Sang Wan nodded and smiled awkwardly.
By the time they returned to Shi Mansion it was already dark. The two went to the main courtyard to greet Mrs. Wang. Mrs. Wang was not seen and sent someone to say "I know" and let them go back. The two then returned to Ningyuan and the night passed without words.
Early the next morning, Shi Fengju went out. After washing up, Sang Wan hurriedly went to serve and greet Mrs. Wang.
After three days, she would officially be considered a member of this family, not a newcomer. As a daughter-in-law, it was proper to serve and set rules in front of her mother-in-law, and she dared not be negligent.
When Sang Wan arrived, Mrs. Wang had just gotten up not long ago, sitting and drinking ginseng tea. Sang Wan quickly went forward to kneel and greet.
"Get up quickly, no need for so many formalities!" Mrs. Wang smiled and raised her hand, then asked, "Haven't you had breakfast yet?"
"Yes. After serving you, it's not too late for me to eat!" Sang Wan said with a smile.
"No need to bother, just eat with me! How was it going back home yesterday? Is everything okay at home?" Mrs. Wang asked casually as she put down the ginseng tea and got up.
"Thank you, mother-in-law! Everything is fine at my natal home, my elder brother and sister-in-law are also fine!" Sang Wan responded with a smile, quickly stepping forward to support Mrs. Wang's arm to the side hall for breakfast. Sang Wan secretly pondered in her heart, it was odd that her mother-in-law was suddenly so kind to her, probably there was something she needed to say.
Mrs. Wang nodded and hummed, then casually spoke some idle talk. The mother-in-law and daughter-in-law sat down, and Mrs. Wang ordered the maids Xiuchun and Xiuli to serve, telling Sang Wan also to eat without the need to serve her. Sang Wan hurriedly thanked her and let the maids serve.
After a while, they finished breakfast, and Mrs. Wang gestured towards Sang Wan with a smile, "Come, accompany me to sit in the flower hall, have a cup of tea to digest!"
"Yes!" Sang Wan quickly agreed and stepped forward to assist her.
Suddenly the maid brought tea, Sang Wan took it, and then listened as Mrs. Wang asked with a smile, "How is the taste of this tea?"
"Naturally good. It looks bright and clear, smells fragrant, and tastes excellent," Sang Wan said briskly with a smile.
Mrs. Wang then sighed with a smile, "This fragrance I only started drinking the year before last when I always felt my stomach was uncomfortable. It was Fangzi who found this tea for me, saying it was good for the spleen and beneficial for the body, and since then I've always been drinking it! Now I'm used to it!"
Hearing Mrs. Wang praising Gu Fangzi, Sang Wan's palms tightened, a sudden jolt in her heart, she could only accompany it with a smile, "That's cousin's filial piety, mother-in-law, you surely didn't dote on her in vain!"
"Isn't it!" Mrs. Wang nodded and said, "I'm not exaggerating, but Fangzi is even more considerate than my own daughters! She has a good temperament, treats people kindly, is meticulous, and is not deceitful! These past two or three years, it's been thanks to her help in managing the affairs of the mansion that I've been able to enjoy some peace! Otherwise, I don't know what mess it would have been!"
Sang Wan felt bitter inside, her tongue seemingly weighed a thousand pounds, not knowing what to say, she just lowly replied "Yes" and forced a smile.
"Miss Wan," Mrs. Wang finally said, "You just entered the family and are not familiar with the affairs of the mansion. I'm not saying that Shi family is like your Sang family, there are many things you don't understand, and it's not something that can be learned in a short while! I think, it's still better to let Fangzi handle the affairs of the mansion, what do you say?"
"The affairs of the mansion are naturally up to you, mother-in-law. Whatever you think is best!" Mrs. Wang's gaze was fixed tightly, and Sang Wan immediately answered with a smile, confronting her gaze squarely.
"Hmm! It's good that you think so too!" Mrs. Wang was satisfied, nodding and smiling, "It seems I haven't misjudged you, you really are sensible! Rest assured, you are Fengju's lawful wife, no one can step over you! As a daughter-in-law, it's important to be virtuous and know when to advance and retreat. Now Fangzi is helping you manage these troublesome matters, you just need to live your life peacefully, take care of your health to bear children for our Shi family soon! Speaking of which, you should also thank her later!"
"Mother is right." Sang Wan said gently with a smile, "There are many affairs in the mansion that inevitably trouble cousin, as her daughter-in-law I truly should thank her!"
"Exactly that!" Mrs. Wang became even happier upon hearing this.
"However, I have something to say, everything else is fine, but having her manage Ningyuan is not okay, what do you think, mother?" Sang Wan asked with a smile.
She couldn't compete for or manage other matters, but Ningyuan was different. That was where she would be living from now on, and it made no sense to let Gu Fangzi interfere, or else she truly wouldn't be able to live peacefully.
Mrs. Wang pondered for a moment, nodded, and said with a smile, "That's also true, you can manage the affairs of Ningyuan yourself!" letting Gu Fangzi manage it would indeed not be proper.
"Yes. Daughter-in-law thanks you, mother!" Sang Wan quickly got up and bowed to her.
Mrs. Wang hummed, having achieved her goal she didn't keep Sang Wan, waving her hand, "Alright, you go back too! Do what you need to do! I don't need your service here! By the way, when you come to greet me in the future, no need to come too early! Come a bit later than today, two quarters of an hour later is enough!"
Mrs. Wang's mother-in-law passed away early, and during her lifetime, she was a gentle person who didn't like to give orders, Mrs. Wang never experienced the hardships of a daughter-in-law becoming a mother-in-law, and thus didn't have the mindset or interest of making up for the hardships by ordering her own daughter-in-law around.
