It was a cloudy afternoon, and no signs of the sun could be spotted from the angle I was. I held the stick I had firmly with dear life. I heard a chuckle behind me, it was Kin, he was laughing at me as if mocking me for being scared. I turned around to look at his mocking eyes. Our attempt to find food in the last five days seemed to be futile, all the animals in the woods seemed to have fled eastward to find sanctuary from something we both mutually feared
" Am exhausted. " I heard Kin say, throwing his stick away.
"Why did you toss it? " I asked with my eyes wide open.
"We haven't seen any of them for miles now, " Kin said sitting on the bare ground. "maybe they went eastward?" I said in a questioning manner hoping Kin would assure me of an answer I anticipated, he barely looked at me.
"We are starving and we got separated from the rest, God knows if they are still alive, I guess I rather let nature take its course" Kin who was chuckling a moment ago seemed cold and hopeless, "There's nothing to defend ourselves with, only sticks that could break in one hit". The words Kin said sent a dark atmosphere in me. I was lost for words, I didn't look at him I continued to move forward
" where are you heading to? To your death? You don't even have the energy to swing that thing you carry around " he was right.
Ever Since the time we got separated from our group, Me and Kin wandered around the woods going in circles trying not to encounter what may spell our doom. Our body was weak from the little sleep and lack of food, and fortunately for us the sky was cloudy and about to rain, we exhausted the little water we had the day before. I sat on the ground also, dropping my only source of defense, I bent my knees forward and placed my hands on it thinking of what to do and where to go. I ignored Kin because I didn't care about what he would say or not say. My stomach was crying for help, pleading to me to find something to fill it with but there was nothing edible in sight.
" kin," I said
"Huhn?"
" You know you are the only edible thing Insight now," I said, intending to cheer him up.
" I know," Kin said while he nodded his head with no hint or drop of emotion. There was a flash of lightning, the atmosphere got darker, followed by the lightning there was thunder a very loud one to be precise, it was a good thing, finally my thirst will be quenched I said to myself. Kin stood to his feet his face alerted and shocked at the same time, He pointed behind me where I dropped my stick slowly trying not to make a sound. He made a gesture with his hands to come with him, I understood what he meant.
It was as if the heavens were with us it was about to rain and now a fully grown rabbit was hopping looking for some shelter, I felt impatience as if to throw my stick at it and kill it. Kin's alerted face was made for me, I guess for me not to make noise, he knew I made noise a lot, and his face took in his usual imprint when I did or when I was about to. The rabbit was surrounded by high bushes it takes a kin eye to see it which Kin did. Kin slowly went in front of the bush to corner the rabbit tip-toeing he grabbed his stick with a couple of large stones, I went behind the rabbit, the rabbit was surrounded both front and back, Kin indicated with his hands meaning if the rabbit where to run either front or back, he'll take the right and I'll take the left, I gave him a thumbs up indicating I understood him.
The moment of truth was upon us, the rabbit grew suspicious, and it turned its head towards me, oh no have been spotted I thought to myself, I was trembling with fear of Losing it. The rabbit turned around but it didn't spot Kin, Kin launched at it like a savage beast, and when he launched at it I felt pity for the rabbit, but pity was far from what the rabbit needed, it outsmarted Kin but I refused for it to outsmart me, I grabbed my stick, and raised it above my head and yes, I missed, the stick hit where the rabbit was staying moments ago the rabbit was now behind me, Kin was after it now running with dear hope of catching it, Kin threw his stones and missed woefully, I let out a laugh looking at Kin's frustrated face, now our potential food was heading towards me moving unpredictably, I grabbed my stick firmly and boom, I thought I hit the rabbit but it turned out I hit Kin in the head. He fell, I tried helping him up but he shoved my hands away pointing at the lucky foot inches away from me. I paused and prayed quickly, I raised my stick with all my might and I missed again this time the rabbit found a hole and ran into it.
" Hah!!!! You idiot! You lost it " Kin said angrily,
" I tried my best " I mumbled, disappointed that I wasted the energy I had hitting Kin's head instead of the rabbit. Kin stood to his feet heading towards me he pushed me to the ground.
"For once Dane be useful! You got us into this damn mess, all cause of you we lost connection with the others, all because of your inability to adapt to things we got lost, stranded in the open, hungry and we are probably going to die!" Kin said furiously his hands clenched into a fist almost punching me
"Wait! " I exclaimed
"What?"
"We need to get out, we need to go now, they're here," I said getting to my feet and grabbing my stick pulling Kin with me.
