Chapter 6: The one who evades

How does life treat the weak and how does it treat those who aren't weak? it treats them the same way, it might be distinctive but it all ends the same, the weak plummet into despair blaming themselves and forgetting the course of their destiny while the ones who ignore weakness look beyond hope and accept the course of life. I decided no matter the odds I would try and find my way back to camp, even if it ended my journey of life. I had survived countless encounters with diseased beasts that nearly feasted on my flesh and bones.

"I have to find my way," I said holding my spear dearly,

Nature was against me that night, the moon was covered with thick clouds and the stars weren't bright enough to shine and illuminate my way through the dark woods. The weather wasn't in my favor either, it got cold with every minute that passed by. No sign of life was around me only the only ones around me were crickets. I checked the bag I had on me for supplies I only had a towel and a few extra clothes, so I put the clothes on to insulate myself with heat. Navigating in the dark without a torch felt perilous. if I continued I could get farther and farther away from camp. I stopped at a halt as if I was commanded by a master, the master I had was my instincts. No fire starters could I see through the dark, trying to gather wood would be futile. If I also stayed I might be hunted by real wolves or zombie wolves neither of them is a good choice and if I pressed on I might get lost and still be hunted and killed by Zombies or carnivores.

My mind was made I decided to find somewhere suitable to rest for the night and continue my perilous journey to safety in the morning, I knew lost track of my environment because of the fear I had allowed to consume me. And I did have high hopes of seeing everyone the day after that, Kin's gonna be mad I know, Heyt might try doing something irrational, but my thoughts ran wild as I paced around finding somewhere suitable to rest.

I heard a sound not too far to my right, it was the sound of a twig snapping. Hearing that I held my spear firmly awaiting the creature that had snapped the twig. I was mistaken, they were not creatures. They were humans but they looked more like illogical people, I knew right away that they were zombies, I saw four of them. They saw something and they were going for whatever they saw.

The fear that vanished appeared like it never left, the unsure hope I had gradually turned into dust. Never have I slayed a humanoid zombie, those were the work of Heyt and Kin. I can't even kill one and now they were four. Another sound followed but it was the sound of someone yelling for dear help, I couldn't say if it was a man or a woman yelling, pleading to the universe to send any blessings from their future to the present. The sound put the zombies in disarray and they headed to the direction where the sound was coming from. To be candid at that moment I felt relieved that the zombies had been lured away from me. I realized something the person was in grave danger being pursued by zombies in nearly pitch darkness. I intended to help but it was pointless, it was pointless moving when I could only feel my way.

There was a clause to my sudden relief, the person spotted by the zombies was heading towards me also shouting this time, almost bursting his lungs off. The voice sounded familiar. It was Kin, it was unexpected to hear him in this state, hearing his voice made me joyous but hearing the scream which I had never heard him do added more fuel of fear in me almost exploding my heart. I took to my feet, my hands stretched forward to feel whatever was in front of me. The sounds behind me were getting closer with every minute. I stopped, waiting for the voice that sounded like Kin to get close enough to hear me.

"Kin!!!!!!" I yelled with all the energy in my voice "This way". I was sure Kin was shocked and disoriented when he heard a human voice in the woods and dumfounded when the voice he heard knew his name

"Who are you" I heard him say as he was still running

" It's me, Dane!!" I yelled before I was jumped by an unexpected visitor, a zombie. we fell to the ground. Through the dark I saw the main goal of the zombie, I could see it trying to sink its teeth into me... I used my spear as a shield between its teeth and my body. I tried using my raw strength to shove it off me. It was working but it ceased to work when it bit through my spear. I was lost for what to do for that brief second, I wondered how it did it. My instincts kicked in and advised me to kick it in the guts, I followed the advice of the only ally I had to protect me against the zombie, I kicked it in the guts lunching it some feet away from me, I grabbed my now shortened spear and raced for the zombie that tried to get up.

"Now's my chance," I said assuring myself. I placed my shortened spear in the only place that I knew ended zombies, their "heads". The zombie stopped moving. I sat on the floor breathing heavily not sure if I was the one who did what I did. For a moment I had forgotten the situation I was in.

My senses came back to me slowly, I heard the word "Run!" My mind didn't process immediately until Kin came running towards me and tried to carry me up, he failed and he pressed on, moving forward. I stood to my feet and followed him to direct me wherever he went.
