Chapter Twenty Three

CHAPTER TWENTY THREE

Jesse

What is Susan doing back here?

Kathleen seems to be wondering the same thing, and her voice is filled with anger, "Why are you here?"

I inch closer and realize that Susan's back is to me, but I can see Kathleen. She doesn't see me, her eyes focused on Susan's face.

"I don't want to hurt you, Kathleen, so stay out of my way," Susan's voice is hard.

"You don't want to hurt me?" Kathleen says, mockingly. "Isn't it a little too late to be saying those words? You lied to me all this time and used me."

"I never used you," Susan sneers. "What benefit could I possibly have gotten out of you?"

I see the hurt in Kathleen's eyes, but under the hurt is raw fury, "I should have realized that something was off when you decided against going with us to save Jesse. With the new barriers in place, they would have detected you."
