Mono's heart raced as he stepped forward, gripping his practice sword tightly. Across from him, Tsuyoi-Hito stood with a confident smirk. The air around them was tense with anticipation, and the other disciples watched eagerly.
"This should be interesting," Hito said, rolling his shoulders to loosen up.
Mono adjusted his stance, meeting Hito's gaze with determination. "Let's find out."
Sensei raised his hand, signaling the start of the duel. Mono and Hito circled each other, each looking for an opening. Hito was the first to strike, lunging forward with a powerful swing. Mono parried the blow, the force vibrating through his arms.
Hito pressed on, his attacks fast and relentless. Mono stayed on the defensive, blocking and dodging each strike. He knew he needed to find an opening, but Hito's speed and strength were impressive.
"Come on, Mono, you can do it!" Josei called out from the sidelines.
As the duel continued, Mono began to see a pattern in Hito's movements. He noticed a slight hesitation in Hito's left side, an opportunity to exploit. Gathering his resolve, Mono feinted to the right, drawing Hito's guard, then quickly shifted and aimed a strike at Hito's left.
Hito barely managed to block the attack, his eyes widening in surprise. "Nice move, Mono," he said, a hint of respect in his voice.
Mono grinned, feeling a surge of confidence. The duel raged on, both fighters giving their all. The sound of clashing wood filled the training yard, echoing off the wooden walls of the dojo. Their swords moved so fast that it looked like a blur, each movement calculated and precise.
Hito pushed forward, forcing Mono to step back. He swung his sword with powerful, controlled movements, aiming for Mono's weak points. Mono blocked and deflected the blows, feeling the impact with each strike. His arms were starting to ache, but he held his ground, waiting for the right moment to counterattack.
Mono took a deep breath and focused. He knew that Hito was strong, but he also knew that he could find a way to win if he stayed calm. He remembered Sensei's teachings about reading an opponent's movements. Mono watched Hito closely, noticing the slight shifts in his stance, the way he gripped his sword, and the rhythm of his attacks.
Hito lunged forward again, aiming for Mono's shoulder. Mono sidestepped, letting the blade pass by him. He spun around and struck at Hito's exposed side, but Hito was quick to block. They exchanged blows, their movements growing faster and more intense.
Meanwhile, Sutoraiba and Sairentokira stood nearby, observing the fight closely. Raiba turned to Tokira and said, "I think I was holding back earlier."
Tokira raised an eyebrow. "What makes you say that?"
Raiba shrugged. "I don't know, just a feeling. I could have done better."
Tokira chuckled softly. "Maybe you're just making excuses."
Raiba's eyes narrowed. "Excuses? I was going easy on you!"
Tokira crossed his arms. "Sure you were. Keep telling yourself that."
Raiba stepped closer, his voice rising. "You don't know anything! I wasn't even trying my hardest!"
Before the argument could escalate further, Josei stepped between them. "Hey, hey, calm down, guys. It's just sparring. Save your energy for the real training."
Raiba and Tokira exchanged a look before reluctantly stepping back, their heated argument dissolving into playful banter.
Back in the center of the yard, Mono and Hito were both starting to tire, their movements slowing. Hito saw an opening and moved in for what looked like the finishing blow. His practice sword swung down with force.
But Mono had noticed something—Hito had been repeating a pattern. As Hito struck, Mono sidestepped and used the momentum to swing his sword in an upward arc, hitting Hito's arm and causing him to drop his sword.
"Point to Mono," Sensei declared.
Hito nodded, breathing heavily. "Well done, Mono. You've gotten stronger."
Mono smiled, lowering his sword. "Thanks, Hito. You're still the toughest opponent."
Sensei stepped forward, addressing the group. "Excellent work, both of you. Remember, improvement comes from every match, whether you win or lose. Learn from each encounter and continue to grow."
Mono and Hito bowed to each other and then to Sensei before stepping back to join the group. Mono felt a sense of accomplishment, but he knew there was still much to learn.
Raiba and Tokira walked over. "Nice job out there, Mono," Raiba said. "You really showed some good moves."
Tokira nodded in agreement. "Yeah, you did well. That was a smart move at the end."
Mono grinned, feeling a sense of camaraderie with his fellow disciples. "Thanks, guys. We all have a lot to learn together."
Josei approached with a smile. "You two were both great. Let's keep pushing ourselves."
Sensei looked at the group, his eyes filled with pride. "You all have shown great potential today. Keep up the hard work, and remember, a true samurai learns from every experience."
