Gregor Bowen was also a worried man. The flamboyant MP for Caithness was unusually serious for one of the most colourful characters in the House of commons. Through his long-time friend, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Gregor had managed to arrange a meeting with the Prime Minister.

It was late in the evening at Downing Street when Gregor was admitted into the Prime Minister’s chambers. The Prime Minister welcomed him warmly enough, but Gregor could see the tiredness in his eyes. Being Prime Minister was a tough job these days, thought Gregor, though he knew well enough that almost every MP in the house would give his eyeteeth for a crack at it.

“Gregor, how good to see you” said the Prime Minister, switching on the charm that was part of his image and trademark.

“And you Prime Minister” said Gregor, his unusual seriousness not going unnoticed.

“What’s the problem?” asked the PM, as they both sat down in the smart but uncomfortable chairs.
