"I have finished the job."
Kyle was seen returning to the pub, heading directly over to Kia to show the proof of the job through the pictures he took. Kia looked at the pictures silently, an obvious look of surprise flashing across her face.
"That's quite brusque for an innocent face..."
Kia's voice showed a bit of uncertainty. Kyle also flinched at such a reaction, but immediately, the cold tone became quite charming as Kia replied,
"But that's how mercenaries gain a presence in the job. Good work; you can start as a newbie now."
Kia tossed a card over to Kyle and slid a drink beside her on the bar table. Kyle scoffed in his mind, took the drink with a little smile at the corners of his face. At the same time, over at Kaer's shop,
"Okay now, that fits quite perfectly!"
Kaer complimented as Luther was seen placing the shop's new name board outside the shop's doors, written on black wood with silver letters in a simple and elegant font.
"I made it extra cool this time. The last one got shot down by bullets from those mercenaries. This one might endure a few."
Luther explained with a proud smile. Hearing him, Kaer nodded with a bright smile along with Luther. But just then, Kaer suddenly questioned,
"Oh, yeah? What happened to the mercenary guy? Did he make some progress? It's already been a week."
Luther nodded and took a glance over the pictures and records of the recent missions he reported.
"He did some Mercenary jobs recently. The trial path has already started. We will be getting the results in a few days..."
"Well, that's a bit convincing enough."
Kaer nodded with satisfaction and started to check up on his items placed carefully over the shelves. Luther followed behind Kaer as he checked those items. Just suddenly, a new possible customer entered the shop.
"So, this is the 'Spectre's Whisper' Shop? It's indeed as 'that guy' said..."
A kind-looking old man wearing round glasses in a winter suit with a hat was seen entering the shop, with a little smile on his face. As he entered the shop, he took off his hat and started moving towards Kaer.
"My, you are indeed as graceful as 'he' has said. Forgive me for my rudeness, but are you possibly Sir Kaer, the owner of this shop?"
"Yes?"
Kaer took his attention to the old man, standing in front of him with Luther at his back, and questioned,
"Who might you be, sir?"
"Oh, what rudeness. I'm Ken, just an ordinary old man from the 12th district. I was recommended to this shop by 'Ray,' a close acquaintance of yours."
As Kaer and Luther heard that familiar name, their eyes suddenly changed. The next moment, Kaer started laughing with joy.
"Haha! Oh my! You should have said that from the beginning! You were sent by Ray, huh! Then please, speak the service you seek."
Kaer was exceptionally bright with his words. The old man in front of him nodded, and with a deep sigh, he stated,
"This is a bit of a long story..."
As the old man spoke, Kaer also became a bit serious. He pointed towards a table with two chairs and with a nod stated,
"I don't have a busy shop. Please explain the story, then..."
The old man nodded, and both sat at the table as Luther brought out some tea and snacks in a few short minutes.
"Sigh..."
The old man released a deep sigh after taking the tea. Kaer observed him, and the next second, the old man took out two pictures of a rather aged old woman and a beautiful young lady from his coat and placed them on the table in front of Kaer.
"This is my wife and daughter... at least in the past. My wife suffered a bandit attack a few years ago, and I lost her forever. My daughter, who was supposed to be getting married the same year, also got involved in the incident, and I lost them both.
I have been living in guilt for years. It's hard and suffocating to live each moment. Every moment feels like one way or another, it was my carelessness that she died. I wanted to apologize to my wife for losing her and even losing my daughter. Now, who knows how she is living right now, even alive or not..."
The old man's trembling voice left a deep silence in the room, Kaer also stayed silent for a brief moment as Luther also frowned but next the old man with a deep sigh questioned again while placing several big bucks on the table
"I wanna meet her again... You know church is too complicated these days, the formalities alone will take over a decade of my life, I might not even live that long and no matter how rich... I'm just a commoner, I won't ever be able to see her,
Sir Kaer, I beg you please, give me the opportunity to use 'Phantom Commune Charm', no matter the price! No matter what! I'm willing to buy it! Just let me buy it! Even at my death bed, I won't be able to die peacefully with such a burden in my heart! Sir! Please!"
The old man's trembling voice left a deep silence in the room. Kaer also stayed silent for a brief moment, and Luther frowned. Next, the old man, with a deep sigh, questioned again while placing several big bucks on the table.
"I want to meet her again. You know, the church is too complicated these days; the formalities alone will take over a decade of my life. I might not even live that long. No matter how rich... I'm willing to buy it! Just let me buy it! Even on my deathbed, I won't be able to die peacefully with such a burden in my heart! Sir! Please!"
The old man was starting to break down, gritting his teeth and tightly grabbing his knees, trembling in unbearable pain. Kaer saw everything and with a sigh commented,
"That's indeed quite the past, but you do know that what you are asking for is a Tier 5 item, right? Even I don't have the luxury to keep distributing such items randomly, no matter how dire the situation."
"You need not worry! Please keep it all! I'm willing to pay for it no matter the cost! I just want to talk! Just want to talk and beg for forgiveness one last time!"
The old man immediately took out a black bank card, whose mere minimum balance alone is 50 million. One can only guess how much money the account even had.
Kaer saw such generosity and quietly took out a purple charm from his suit packed up in a wooden box and slid it over to the old man with a sigh.
"It's a one-time-use item, as you might know. I pray for your peace."
The old man immediately grabbed the item and, while bowing several times with a bright face, slowly left the shop.
"I will be grateful! I'm forever in debt! Thank you! Thank you!"
The old man left the shop, thanking them again and again. Kaer and Luther also stayed there quietly with smiles as he left. But just a few dozen seconds after he left, the facial expressions of Kaer and Luther became stone-cold. Kaer stood back up and commanded Luther.
"Clean this wretched stench."
"Yes."
Luther immediately grabbed the broom and perfume as Kaer commanded and started to clean the way this old man had stepped on. The next moment, Kaer commanded again, even more coldly.
"... And then clean up the swamp too."
"Yes."
Luther silently accepted the order as his presence slowly became darker too.
