Chapter 34

Awareness slipped through my mind slowly. It brought the crunch of tires over gravel one sharp rock at a time and ALL THE BUMPS. It might be obvious, but I wasn't a fan of trunk life.

For the first time in what seemed like a long time, Bernadette slowed. My stomach tightened. I'd lost track of time, so we could be anywhere - we meaning Bernadette, me, and our kidnapper. Whoever that was. When the trunk popped open again, I needed to have a plan. It was so hard to think straight with my knocked-around brain though.

To see what my options were like, I slid my hands over the rough carpet underneath me. Ah-ha! My phone! Good thing I hadn't dropped it. It provided enough light to see that I had zero signal. At the very least, I could snap a photo of whoever opened the trunk.

Unless I could open it first.
