Chapter 48

By the time I made it to the Black family farm, my sugar high had propped my eyelids open with sugary toothpicks.

"Victoria," Gran exclaimed when she answered my knock. "What a pleasant surprise."

Even though it was July in Georgia, she wore a black velour sweat suit. Her big blue Ring of Everlasting Sunblock decorated one finger. Travis wore one, too, and the rings allowed the two vampires to walk around in the daylight.

Gran held the door open. "Come in, come in."

"Thanks," I said as I followed her inside, then I chuckled to myself. On the backside of her sweatpants were two peaches with the words Just Peachy over them. Fitting, given that this was a peach farm and the Blacks lived and breathed peaches.

"I love your hair like that," I told her. Her white hair had been cut into a stylish pixie haircut since the last time I'd seen her. "It looks great on you."

She turned in the entryway, a big grin on her face. "Oh, stop. You really like it?"

"It's perfect for you."
