Chapter 100

The bored-looking policewoman behind the front desk perked up noticeably when she spotted Travis. She was young and blonde and much too pretty. The printer behind her sounded like it had crickets in it as it spit out paper after paper. A ream of paper next to it suddenly fluttered to the ground, all by itself. That was definitely something Studmuffin would knock over, but when I looked down, he was sitting next to me while purring loudly.

"Can I help you?" the policewoman asked Travis, ignoring me.

"We're here to see Detective Palmer," I told her, raising my voice over the chirping printer.

Her blue eyes narrowed as she tapped her pencil on the crossword puzzle in front of her. "It's long past time for him to go home. Why don't you come back tomorrow?"

"It's regarding Ethen, um, Chauffeur Ethen's murder earlier this evening." A frown tugged at my mouth. I didn't even know Ethen's last name.
