Chapter 103

His eyes wide, Studmuffin popped out of existence.

My jaw dropped. "I said hide, not abandon me."

Outside the evidence room door, footsteps sounded. Someone was coming.

My brain flashed me all my options, none of which were any good. I could levitate, but the room was small enough that I would still be seen. I could shoot a rainbow out of my forehead, but that protection spell had to be done outside while it was damp. I could hide...but where?

The footsteps slowed outside the evidence room door, followed by the steady click of the keypad.

I backed away from the door, searching every corner and mentally shaking my fist at my familiar. Maybe I could try to fold myself into one of these boxes, but they were file-storage sized, not witch sized. Plus, I did not fold well.

Just as the door swung open, I dodged to the right behind the end of a shelf. Hidden, for now.
