I tried to hide my shock. "How so?"
"He was all set to retire in December, and I was picked to be his replacement." She flicked her gaze between Boxy by her side and me across from her, as though surprised we hadn't caught on to her point. "It's a hefty pay raise from bookmobile driver to library director."
Boxy rubbed her shoulder. "No one believes you did it, Isabella. No one."
"But as far as I can tell, I'm the only person to gain something if he died," she said.
"We don't know that for sure," I told her. "I don't doubt for a second that you would make a fantastic library director, but why not the assistant director? Why isn't she getting the promotion?"
"Because Louise is retiring in August," she answered.
