"I know," Cass said. "I was afraid whoever it was would scare my missing fingers off for good."
I winced. "I hope not."
"Same. Then Travis texted me about bigger issues, and I left here." She nudged me lightly, the firelight dancing all over her big grin. "He kissed you, you know."
"Yeah. I know."
"You didn't look like you hated it."
"I..." I gulped as I gave a wide berth to a random human-shaped shadow on the floor. It wasn't attached to anyone or anything though. It was just simply there.
A sudden realization funneled every bit of breath from my lungs.
The Eye Shadow, as in Boxy's amulet that the detective had been touching when he disappeared. Could he be here in the shadow library, somewhere, somehow? Could he have been who Cass heard breathing?
"Detective Palmer?" I called, looking around at all the shadows.
The only thing that replied was my echo ringing between the walls. My cell phone's ring followed. It was Travis.
"Hello?" I answered immediately.
