Nadine wrenched the window up, nearly knocking the backwards cap off her head with the force of it. Her arms were about twice the size as mine. From out of her house rolled the scents of moldy salami and cheap whiskey, the same smells Cass had smelled at the library.
"I knew I heard something out here," she said.
"Oh, hi." I shrugged and forced a smile, a mistake that probably made me look ten times guiltier. "I was just out...you know...jogging."
In boots. With a backpack on. In the rain. Yikes.
Nadine nodded and crossed her arms. "Jogging along the side of my house while crouched down below my window and playing on your phone?"
"Is that not how you're supposed to jog?" My jaw dropped in mock surprise. "Have I been doing it wrong this whole time?"
I was stalling. Stalling for what, I had no idea, but this was me stalling so I could wriggle my way out of this. Note to self - get way better at stalling.
