  I was still sitting on the bed, my back against the headboard, body tense. Braced because it was clear that whatever Cara had to say wasn’t going to be good. She wouldn’t even meet my eyes.

  Shit.

  I told myself I needed to find a way to be okay with that. If she was going to say I had to face my dad without completing the bond, I was sure I could—

  “You’re special enough,” she said suddenly, quietly.

  The babbling voice in mind went utterly still.

  I gaped at her. “I… what?”

  Chin still low, she lifted her eyes to meet mine, her cheeks reddening. I wasn’t sure if she realized her knees tightened against my thighs, but I didn’t move. I couldn’t.

  “You’re special enough. More than special enough,” she said, her voice hushed. “I… I don’t want you to think I’m holding back because I’m worried about you or don’t want you enough or… it’s not that.”
