　　“Family?” I blinked. “Are you guys—”

　　“No,” he said tightly. “I meant… I meant Harmony and the other wolves.”

　　I waited, but he just held my gaze warily and didn’t offer anymore.

　　What was happening for them? What didn’t he want to tell me?

　　“So, you’re saying unless I take this pack from you, you’re out? That’s it? Done?”

　　His jaw rolled and he turned away, looking out the windows in the direction the girls had gone, his eyes pinched. “I’m saying… I’m saying that the risk is too high. I’m not going back to the city. I’m not facing Dad. I’m saying that’s your job, if you want it.”

　　Then he looked at me, and I did see the shadow of regret in his eyes. The hint of self-doubt.

　　I turned away and started pacing again.
