Su Ke didn't know if he had caught a cold from the students in the neighboring room, but by the eighth day of the exam, he felt both heavy-headed and light-footed, though he could still grit his teeth and endure it.
It was not until he had finished answering all the questions and struggled to swallow his food that he realized he couldn't swallow it at all, and his throat was painfully burning.
He managed to wrap himself in the quilt that was both hard and stiff and went to sleep. Throughout the night, he alternated between sweating profusely and shivering with cold. When he heard the Chief Examiner announce that it was time to hand in their papers on the ninth day, he staggered out of the examination hall.
Fortunately, he still remembered what he was concerned about and, before leaving, took the three candles he had bought with his silver coins.
It was only after he left the examination hall and saw the sky above him that Su Ke realized how good the air outside really was!
