"Yawn!" Basil Jaak sneezed twice in succession, and grumbled irritably: "One sneeze means someone's thinking about you, two means someone's cursing you. I wonder who the ungrateful person is cursing behind my back."


"With your behavior, more than one person must be cursing you," Fiona Turner scornfully remarked. "It's your turn now, hurry up and play!"


Jaak glanced at the cards in his hand, three aces and a little king, then looked at the cards Turner had played. It was a pair of kings!


Though he could beat the pair of kings with a pair of aces, this would leave only one ace and one little king in his hand. If Debby Sutton and Fiona Turner used a pair of twos to beat his pair of aces, and then kept passing cards or playing pairs, using the big king to defeat him, Jaak would end up losing this round.


However, if he did not beat Fiona Turner's pair of kings, he was genuinely terrified she would continue to play pairs, leaving him incapable of playing any cards.
