Chapter 007: 【The Chen Family Men】_1

Nightfall came, darkness shrouding the cityscape. The neon lights illuminated the entire city, the gentle night breeze and seductive ambiance felt like an illusionary city, entrapping countless people, unable to extricate themselves.

As the most developed inland city, Donghai City was relatively safe. While Chen Fan and Susan were bickering, a few uniformed auxiliary police officers arrived.

The officers looked at Susan with admiration when they learned that she single-handedly subdued two thieves.

These voluntary officers, who were not on the official payroll, received a low monthly salary. They didn't have a high sense of professional ethics so, when faced with a knife-wielding bandit, they would not risk their lives for their paltry income.

Susan, who fought life and death against two thieves for a stranger who didn't even say thanks, how could they not respect her?

Facing the admiring gazes of the officers, Susan looked triumphant, almost like she could rest on her laurels. The challenged gaze at Chen Fan seemed to say, "Coward, don't envy me. You won't get this kind of treatment in your entire life!"

Seeing Susan's challenging gaze, Chen Fan didn't know whether to laugh or cry.

Ten minutes later, the officers took the two arrested thieves away. Chen Fan drove Susan home.

Susan's father Soo Qinghai may not be a big shot in the Forbes ranks, but in Donghai's business world, he made quite a name for himself with substantial wealth.

Susan, as the only child, was a typical rich girl. She had a bit of the rich girl's temperament but wasn't ostentatious. Her vehicle wasn't a million-dollar sports car but a crowd-pleasing Volkswagen CC.

Perhaps Susan was worn out from the afternoon. She soon fell asleep after getting into the car.

In her sleep, Susan wasn't as lively as her awake self. She leaned into the back of the car seat like a small wild cat, her eyebrows extended, eyes lightly closed, delicate nose, and soft lips like ripe cherries.

Although Donghai's transportation network was well developed, there were too many vehicles. During rush hours, traffic jams were unavoidable.

To avoid waking Susan, Chen drove the car smoothly instead of skillfully racing through traffic.

Forty minutes later, the car arrived at the residential compound where Chen Fan and Susan lived.

This was an incredibly upscale compound, not as famous as Tomson Yipin, but the prices were not far off, and those who lived here were either rich or noble.

Parking the car in the parking lot, Chen Fan gently patted Susan's shoulder.

In her sleep, Susan frowned, swatted Chen Fan's hand away, and continued to sleep deeply.

"Darn, she sleeps more than a pig." He commented, but Chen Fan did not increase his strength. He understood very well that it's harmful to be suddenly awakened from deep sleep, especially for the heart. Many people with heart disease die in the early morning, mostly due to this.

Half a minute later, Susan slowly opened her sleepy eyes, stretched a sultry lazy waist, yawned enchantingly, and her floral buds trembled with her movements.

"Did we get home?" Susan looked at Chen Fan with a giggle, seeming to be very satisfied that Chen Fan had not disturbed her sleep along the way.

Chen Fan smiled and nodded: "Yes."

"My love, the stuff in the car is up to you." Susan mumbled sweetly, opened the car door, leaving a stylish silhouette for Chen Fan.

Chen Fan couldn't help but laugh and cry when he got off the car and picked up the stuff Susan had bought all afternoon, following Susan from behind.

"Eh, why are the lights on at home? Could there be a burglar?" As soon as she got out of the parking lot, Susan saw the lights of the apartment she and Chen Fan lived in, and she exclaimed.

Chen Fan's hands were full of shopping bags. When he heard Susan's words, he was surprised and displeased, saying: "Burglar your head! I think the burglars you caught today really got into your head! Do you really think a burglar would be dumb enough to turn on all the lights in the house while robbing?"

"Could it be that Aunt Tian is back?" Reminded by Chen Fan, Susan seemed to have understood something and had an elated expression on her face.

Originally, when Susan's parents found out Chen Fan was going to college in East Sea, they forced Susan to practice cooking. But Susan really didn't have a knack for it. Helplessly, Susan's parents hired a housekeeper for them.

Aunt Tian, from Susan's mouth, was their housekeeper, responsible for their daily life.

Two days ago, Aunt Tian's daughter suddenly had a high fever that wouldn't subside, so Chen Fan told Aunt Tian to go home and take her daughter to see a doctor. He didn't expect her to return in just two days.

"Miss, young master Chen, I tried to call you both and couldn't get through. Just in case, I've made dinner for you. Have you eaten?" Aunt Tian heard the door opening, quickly walked out from the kitchen, wiped the sweat off her forehead, and said with a smile. The dining room behind her was filled with an appetizing aroma, and four dishes and a soup were placed on the dining table.

Susan kicked off her extravagant crystal sandals in a rather ungracious manner, beaming on her bare feet, and exclaimed excitedly, "Aunt Tian, it is great that you're back. You have no idea how bad Chen Fan's cooking was in these two days."

"Aunt Tian, sorry that we missed your calls as our phones ran out of battery. By the way, is your daughter feeling better now?" Chen Fan, who rarely did not engage in arguments with Susan, asked Aunt Tian with slight concern.

To find the right housekeeper for the two of them, Susan's mother put in a lot of thought and after careful selection, she eventually chose Aunt Tian.

According to Susan's mother, Aunt Tian was still single and had a daughter studying in a prestigious school in East Sea. This wasn't because Aunt Tian's family was wealthy. On the contrary, they were poor. Aunt Tian's daughter was able to attend the prestigious school because they didn't charge her tuition.

Under the lights, Aunt Tian seemed surprised that Chen Fan would ask such a question and was taken aback, revealing a surprised expression on her wrinkled face.

Even though the relentless years had erased Aunt Tian's beauty, Chen Fan could tell that she must have been a beautiful woman in her youth.

A once beautiful woman remained single and raised her daughter alone without any marriage. Without saying, Chen Fan knew that Aunt Tian was a woman with a story, but since Aunt Tian never mentioned it, Chen Fan naturally wouldn't ask.

"Thank you for your concern, Young Master Chen, my daughter has already recovered her health." After a moment of silence, there seemed a wave of emotion in Aunt Tian's eyes. It seemed like she hadn't received such care in a long while.

Chen Fan smiled, not saying anything more.

After dinner, Chen Fan retreated to his study alone, Susan was about to take a bath and apply a facial mask, but she received a call from Su Qinghai.

"Dad, you remember to call me? I thought you'd forgotten about me, hmph!" As soon as the line connected, Susan began to tease like usual.

On the other end of the phone, Su Qinghai chuckled, "Aren't you with Chen Fan?"

"Dad, I'm fine until you mention that jerk. The moment you do, it fills me with rage!" Susan huffed angrily.

Su Qinghai was taken aback, "What happened? Did you two have a fight?"

"A fight? Dad, fighting with that jerk is a daily thing for us, I'm used to it." Susan pouted, huffing dismissively.

Su Qinghai was puzzled,"Then why are you upset?"

"Isn't school starting tomorrow? This afternoon we went shopping, came across a couple of thieves on our way back. While I went forward to catch the thieves, that coward was hiding in the back watching the action." Just at the mention of this, Susan wished she could storm into Chen Fan's room and give him a sound kicking. "You wouldn't believe how dangerous it was, after I knocked one down, the other pulled out a knife and tried to slash at me, nearly got my leg."

Hearing Susan's words, Su Qinghai's expression changed slightly on the other end of the phone, "You're saying the thief nearly stabbed your leg with a knife?"

"Yeah, I tried to kick his wrist, but then he swung his knife at my leg. No idea why his knife flew out of his hand, and then I broke his wrist with another kick." Recalling the situation, Susan realized that the thief had let go of the knife himself, not because she had kicked it away.

Once Susan made this known, Su Qinghai had a moment of realization, his eyebrows relaxed. He laughed, "The thief was probably scared by my precious daughter. After all, she's a red belt in Taekwondo."

"That's right! Dad, you won't believe it, there were dozens of people watching and no one dared to stop the thieves. I hit them a few times and the two of them were left blooming cheek to cheek..." When Susan heard Su Qinghai's praise, she was overjoyed and acted as if she were truly a martial arts master reborn.

Su Qinghai just quietly listened, without interrupting. It wasn't until Susan hung up that he lit a cigarette.

The thick smoke obscured Su Qinghai's expression, and he seemed lost in thought, remaining still for a long time.

After who knows how long, Su Qinghai felt a sting in his fingers and look down to find that the cigarette had burnt out.

Tossing the cigarette butt into the ashtray, Su Qinghai slowly rose, walked to the floor-to-ceiling window, and looked at the inky northern sky, murmuring, "Silly girl, how could a man from the Chen family be a coward?"
