Chapter 278: Escape (Part One) _1

The skies darkened once again, the feeble sun, radiating not nearly enough warmth, struggled for a few moments and then reluctantly sank beneath the horizon, allowing the darkness to envelop the earth once more.

At an abandoned car repair shop on the outskirts of Los Angeles, Bernie cautiously scanned his surroundings. Once he made sure it was safe and deserted, he pulled up the collar of his windbreaker, concealing his face within the darkness, and swiftly pulled open the rust-stained iron door to enter the workshop.

"Bernie?"

A woman's voice echoed from inside the shop. Britney emerged from the clutter of repair equipment, wrapped in a blanket.

"I found us some food."

Switching on the workshop lights, Bernie opened a black plastic bag under the dim, yellow glow, revealing a jumble of bread, milk, and other food items.

"What's it like out there?"

Britney was less interested in food than in the situation outside.
