Wei Fang woke up in a foreign room. He didn't know where he was. But he was thankful that he was still alive.
'It's great to be alive.'
This was the first time he felt so close to death. He could still feel how his sense was fading away and his warmth was leaving him bit by bit.
It was a frightening experience; if he could, he didn't want to experience it again. But Wei Fang knew that it was impossible because everyone would experience death eventually, be it because of old age, sickness, accident, or being killed. Unless he could achieve so-called immortality, he was self-aware that, with his talent and ability, he could never achieve it.
Suddenly, he heard the sound of a door opening.
"Oh, you're awake?" Doctor Ming asked.
"Are you the one who saved me?" Wei Fang asked as he sat up.
"You could say that." Doctor Ming answered.
"Thank you very much for saving me." Wei Fang bowed toward Doctor Ming.
"How should I call you, benefactor?" Wei Fang asked.
"Benefactor? Hahahaha, it has been such a long time since the last time I was called that." Doctor Ming seemed to be amused.
"You can call me Doctor Ming like the others. You don't need to thank me excessively; I am just doing my job as a doctor. And also, I was paid to save you." Doctor Ming said.
"Ah, I need to pay?" Wei Fang scratched his head and said, "But I don't have any money."
"You don't need to; it was already paid by the Cloud River Sect." Doctor Ming explained.
"Fiuuh." Wei Fang was relieved: "Regardless, I still need to thank you."
"This time I came here first to check on your condition in case you still hadn't woke up, but seeing you already awake, I think there was no need for it. And the second is to inform you about your condition." Doctor Ming explained.
"My condition?" Wei Fang instantly noticed the meaning of the word; there was something wrong with him.
"Yes." Doctor Ming nodded.
"Although you survived the attack, some meridian near your heart was severed," Doctor Ming explained.
"My neridian is severed?" Wei Fang interjected.
"Yes."
Wei Fang suddenly felt as if his soul was leaving his body as he let his body fall into the bed, looking at the ceiling blankly.
Wei Fang knew what was meridian; it was the channel where cultivators' qi was circulating.
If his meridian was cut off, it would mean his cultivator path was cut off.
'What wrong did I do to deserve this?'
'Why is this happening to me?'
"Because you're weak." As if answering his questions, a voice pulled him back from his thoughts.
He looked at the source of it and saw Doctor Ming look at him while smiling. But he could see that his eyes were serious.
"Is being weak wrong?" He suddenly asked.
"I don't know if being weak is wrong." Doctor Ming shook his head. "But what I know is that being weak was never right."
Wei Fang fell silent hearing that; he realized every now and then that the ones whose voice was heard were only the strong. Like when they discussed the night shifts when they selected the captain.
He also remembered that in the sect, the higher the cultivation, the more important their position was. He took a deep breath to calm down. Then asked with a trembling voice, "Am I unable to cultivate anymore?"
"You can." Doctor Ming shook his head and said, "Your meridian was not fully severed, so you could still cultivate. But it would become more difficult.
"You could try circulating your cultivation technique to see the effect."
Wei Fang immediately started to cultivate. But when his qi reached his chest region, he felt some pain, like being pierced by many needles, which made him grimace. The flow of qi was also slower than in other regions; moreover, some qi was lost, making the effects of cultivation less than half what they used to be.
When he opened his eyes again, he sighed. He remembered the scene he saw in the slum before; was he also going to become like them?
Suddenly he remembered something: 'Yes, the system!' Because of what happened recently, he almost forgot about it. Hope began to fill his eyes again.
But he immediately reacted, and his expression returned to those who had already resigned.
"How is it?" Doctor Ming asked.
Wei Fang shook his head and said in a resigned tone, "At least I can still cultivate."
"Doctor, can severed meridians be cured?" He asked with some hope.
"Yes, it can. But it was difficult." Doctor Ming answered, "There is only some heavenly treasure or precious medicine that can do it.
"I only knew one such heavenly treasure, which was called the Heart Connecting Vine."
"Thank you for your information, Doctor." Wei Fang nodded.
"Do you want me to keep this matter a secret?" Doctor Ming asked.
"No need; they would learn of it sooner or later, so let it be." Wei Fang said, shaking his head.
"Alright." Doctor Ming nodded.
"You need to rest here for a few more days before you can come back to Cloud River Sect." Doctor Ming said as he walked out of the room.
Wei Fang heard some conversation from the outside; he could guess that they were talking about his condition.
Because he told Doctor Ming to not conceal his condition, it would most likely spread after a while.
However, he wasn't worried about it. He was already prepared to face the consequences his condition would bring.
"Junior Brother, how's your condition?"
Wei Fang saw a familiar face enter the room among the Cloud River Sect disciples.
"Greeting, Senior Borther Zhao Wu." Wei Fang said politely, "It's alright; after the treatment from Doctor Ming, my wound has already started to heal."
"Thank God, you're alright." Zhao Wu said.
"Thank you for your concern, Senior Brother Zhou."
"I feel relieved seeing that you are already awake." Zhao Wu said, "I still had something going on, so I need to excuse myself, Junior Brother."
"It's okay, Senior Brother; there's no need to be polite."
Wei Fang looked at Zhao Wu as he came out of the room. He noticed that he was not as enthusiastic about him as before.
'Is it because he learned that my meridian was severed?'
But he could understand it; maybe he saw something in him that made him interested, but now that his meridian was severed, he didn't see any more point in interacting with him. After all, he was at the foundation establishment while he was just tiny Qi condensation realm. Cultivators were just that realistic.
Then, he turned his attention to the disciples from the Cloud River Sect and asked, "Is there something you need, fellow disciples?"
"No, we just want to see you if you are alright." One of them said, "Now that we already see you, we excuse ourselves."
Wei Fang could see contempt in their gazes as they looked at him.
