Run away

Gabby's POV

It's dawn, I stepped in front of my porch and I could still see the fogs that hadn't lifted yet.

I heard my brothers scrambling upstairs to get ready to go to school.

I cannot wait to break the news yol them because I'm confident that they would love it.

Yesterday I had gone to buy a house very far away from this place. It was actually very cheap for it's value, it had five rooms enough for each of my brothers to have their own rooms and enough space to move around, it was better than this crumped up match box I called a house. I had left fifty thousand dollars, it wouldn't be able to last for too long.

It was not as if we had any other choice. Since my parents had passed away and all the properties they left behind was ceased by my uncles and aunts, they left my brothers and I with nothing.

I had to work in a convenience store, I had to work in a bar and also as a waitress in the nearby restaurant, I had to sacrifice my time so that my brothers would be fine.

"Larry, Harry, Tommy, Sammy, gather round!." I yelled in excitement as I walked into the house. Larry was holding a box of cereal, Harry's toothbrush was still in his mouth, Sammy was already dressed for school while Tommy was putting their breakfast together, he took the plate from Larry's hand and set it on the dining table.

"Is everything alright sis?." Tommy asked me. "What the in the name of- -where is the milk I dropped on the table?!." Tommy asked the others.

" Harry!." Tommy yelled.

" I didn't take it." Harry defended.

" Here." Larry said taking the milk carton from the shelf where he had kept it.

Tommy glared at him.

Tommy was the oldest of four of them, he was sixteen, Larry was fourteen, Sammy was twelve and Harry was only ten years old. They all had their roles to play, they figured their shit earlier in life because they were abandoned and I was barely even home to look after them so they had to find their paths themselves.

Tommy was the dominating and commanding big brother, he made sure that everyone was kept in a straight line but Larry was stubborn and wreckless, he gave Tommy a hard time, Sammy was the guardian, he loved to watch after everyone, himself, Tommy, Larry, Harry…even me, he was so responsible that I was scared that one day it would take a toll on him and he might break, Harry was a fighter, hard to cry, hard to control, he always did whatever his heart said and he didn't follow the rules, most times he almost made me run mad.

I wondered why my parents named us after a rhyme, people outside found it amusing, but they didn't know the difficulty we faced while calling out our names.

" You guys, Please listen!." I said trying to break the jumble.

"Gabby's got something to say, listen up!." Tommy commanded, everyone kept shut. I shot him a thank you nod and he gave a knowing smile.

Sammy was sitting quietly on the couch watching me, he had been searching my face for a clue of what I was about to say, I could see that he was scared, maybe it was bad news, he would have thought.

"I got a big bonus from a friend of mine and we're moving out." I said.

"Huh?." Harry asked. "Where?." He added.

"I had made preparations through out yesterday and everything has been paid for, everything is in the house, furniture, groceries…guys this house is bigger and better. Trust me." I said.

"What about my friends, we're just gonna leave?." Harry asked, he was at the edge of storming out of the house.

"We can't move, what's wrong with this house, it's small and I have to share a bed with Tommy but— Harry is right Gabby, we can't leave. " Larry said. " Who am I going to play videogames with, you have been promising me a playstation since I was in middle school....now all of a sudden you get a bonus and you went and bought a house without even asking if we would like to move." Larry continued.

" When are we supposed to pack our things, what about school?." Harry continued.

" Harry shut the Fuck up and go get your things, Larry let me not hear another word from you. Sammy help Harry get his things ready." Tommy said.

Sammy stood up, Harry was angry, Larry was furious but they didn't say anything out of fear.

"You better not stomp your way up the stairs you hear me?." Tommy shouted and the stomping ceased immediately.

Sammy was at the foot of the stairs, waiting behind to hear the conversation between Tommy and I. I had seen Tommy cry before because of Jake's attack towards me, I would never let that happen again.

"Is it for safety reasons?." Tommy asked me.

I nodded.

"Good. What about the money, how did you get it?." He asked with concern.

"Kaya... She found a rich guy and due to some circumstances I got the money." I told him.

"Kaya now has a boyfriend?." He asked in surprise.

"Is that why she hasn't been coming to visit?." Sammy asked me.

"Yes, she's happy now I guess." I told them.

"So she just abandoned us?." Tommy asked, the word abandoned was easily used in our house, it wasn't a new word.

"That's so unlike Kaya." Sammy muttered to himself.

"It's fine. We can do without her." Tommy said trying to convince himself, Kaya was someone that has been in his life since he was five. He loved her, everybody loved her. He was in pain but he shook it off his shoulder, he was used to holding back his emotion.

I watched them climb the stairs.

"Wait Gabby...I was thinking that maybe" Tommy said. "Never mind." He said going upstairs.

"What about school?." Sammy asked, I thought he had left.

"Uhh-mm we'll find something." I said to him with a smile.

He gave a shorter version of his usual smile and he left.

I started to think of other ways to come up with more money, I couldn't keep working in convenience stores all my life. I needed to find more money for our up keep.

They say there was no better way of making money than doing the abominable, I was ready to dig my hands into dirt to get money.
