For Li Mo, the most important aspect of being a Board member was the **authority** it granted.
As for the rest...
"So, being a Board member is pretty much useless. Instead, it just exposes you to a bunch of nonsense."
"Oh, is that so?"
"Doctor~~~"
"I think you should stop wasting my time. As a doctor, I'm very busy."
"But hasn't the number of patients decreased recently?"
District 7, Heaven Canceller's hospital. Even now, Li Mo didn't know the name of this hospital. All he knew was that Heaven Canceller worked here.
"Even doctors need rest, right? Frenda can be discharged now. There's no point in further observation. Yesterday, you officially became a Board member, didn't you? Congratulations." Heaven Canceller spoke indifferently.
The position of a Board member in Academy City seemed insignificant in his eyes.
Li Mo shrugged. "I'm just venting a little."
"I'm not a therapist."
"Anyone can be a sounding board." Li Mo said as he left.
Heaven Canceller watched Li Mo's retreating figure, his hands in his pockets, deep in thought. Past experience told him that he sensed a certain resolve in that young man.
"Have you made a decision? Just like Accelerator?"
In the hospital, you could always encounter strange people, including espers. Among them, the #1 esper had left a particularly deep impression on Heaven Canceller.
This city was shrouded in thick darkness.
But that didn't mean there was no light.
"Let's go, Frenda."
"Big brother!"
Entering the room, Li Mo greeted Frenda, who was packing her things. However, there wasn't much to pack. She had been brought here from the battlefield, and at that time, she had no personal belongings. Her sister, Fremea, upon seeing Li Mo at the door, rushed over and leaped into his arms.
"Aren't you worried I might not catch you?"
"Big brother will definitely catch me!"
Fremea was utterly confident in her brother.
Holding the little girl in his arms, Li Mo said to Frenda, "I've found a place. Let's go, Frenda."
"Oh, okay!"
October 20th, Frenda was discharged.
On Heaven Canceller's medical record, there was a line that read, "The patient received perfect treatment before admission."
Li Mo's healing magic, though not masterful, was more than enough to sustain life.
The new home was in District 7. Among Academy City's twenty-three districts, Li Mo was most familiar with this one. Kamijou Touma's high school and Misaka Mikoto's Tokiwadai Middle School were both located here.
Frenda was very familiar with District 7. She had many friends scattered across Academy City. As a dark side operative, she had to move between the twenty-three districts frequently, so she knew the area well.
Leaving the hospital, Frenda gently touched her abdomen, where Mugino Shizuri had injured her two days ago. Half of her lower abdomen had been torn open, and her intestines had spilled out. If it hadn't been for the protective charm blocking the first attack, giving her time to react to the second, she would have been cut in half.
The image of being bisected at the waist flashed through her mind.
Frenda shuddered at the thought.
That frog-faced doctor had used some kind of medicine to heal her completely. Well, she'd remember this place! If she ever got seriously injured again, she'd come here! With that doctor's skills, even without medicine, he could probably cure anything, right?
"Frenda, what are you thinking about? You're smiling so happily."
"I know, I know! Big sister must be happy because she doesn't have to take bitter medicine!" Fremea, still in Li Mo's arms, raised her hands and answered eagerly.
"Oh? So Frenda doesn't like bitter medicine?"
"That's not it! I just don't like taking medicine in general!"
"So, you're okay with topical medicine?"
Frenda looked at the young man before her. This question was subtly intriguing.
The girl couldn't bring herself to say no.
Then, Frenda changed the subject. "Big brother, did you really become a Board member just like that?"
"Yeah? What did you expect?"
"No... it just feels unreal." The brother she had only recently met had suddenly become one of the most powerful figures in Academy City. This subtle contrast was hard to put into words.
Frenda, however, had a go-with-the-flow personality. She said, "But, yay! Now I have a Board member as my backer!"
No longer naive, the girl deeply understood that even though her organization, **Item**, had espers, in the eyes of the Board members, they were just useful tools, loyal dogs. They might treat Mugino with some respect due to her status, but that didn't change their position.
But having a Board member as a backer was different.
Frenda became more spirited, standing tall and proud.
"Big sister, big sister!" Fremea climbed down from Li Mo's arms and tugged at Frenda's sleeve. "Don't be so proud! That's not good behavior! As children, we should be humble, meow!"
"No, Fremea. When it's time to be proud, you should be proud. Always backing down will only make others take advantage of you!"
"Being humble isn't backing down!"
"Being humble and backing down are pretty much the same."
The two little girls, both wearing berets, started arguing on the side of the road. Li Mo crossed his arms and smiled as he watched the scene.
For some reason, it felt like raising daughters.
They're so cute, these two.
Eventually, Frenda, leveraging her age advantage, won the argument and strutted around like a proud swan. Fremea, on the other hand, sought comfort in Li Mo's arms.
October 20th, two days after Russia declared war. The atmosphere in Academy City remained peaceful. Students hadn't stopped attending classes because of the war, and everything continued as usual.
The streets were filled with students, as it was after-school hours. Academy City's school schedule wasn't much different from Japan's, with early dismissal times.
A young man carrying two little girls was quite conspicuous. However, as they left the commercial district, the streets became quieter, and there were hardly any pedestrians.
Fremea had fallen asleep in Li Mo's arms.
"Fremea's asleep."
"Yeah. Did you two stay up late last night? Aren't you tired?"
Frenda shook her head. "I'm used to it."
"Frenda, let me ask you. Do you think the dark side of Academy City is reasonable as it is now?"
"Reasonable? Big brother, isn't the dark side just supposed to exist like this?"
"But I don't think so. It's too chaotic. Every dark side organization acts on its own will. It's like a breeding ground for chaos. The Board's management of the dark side is too crude."
—As a Board member, gaining access to the city's inner workings revealed its true nature.
Li Mo had complained to Kihara Noukan that despite the city's relatively short history, the amount of nonsense happening was staggering.
The dark side wouldn't disappear. Li Mo knew that much. At least, not while Aleister remained the Chairman.
The chaotic situation needed to be changed. Since he had time, why not try to change it?
Li Mo was a carefree person.
If he felt the dark side needed rules, he would make it happen.
