Chapter 539: Princess’s Choice

As the world's appointed guardians chosen by the Titans, the six-colored dragons had always been aloof and distant.

Due to their low reproductive ability, dragons were rare in number.

They focused solely on their assigned duties, showing little interest in the rise and fall of mortal races.

To them, protecting the world was an obligation, and they never allowed mortals to interfere.

The blue dragons, guardians of magic, once dedicated themselves to maintaining the ley lines and researching arcane arts.

However, after nearly being wiped out by Deathwing during the War of the Ancients, they naturally became even more elusive to mortals.

The green dragons, as Ysera's kin, devoted themselves to preserving nature and the Emerald Dream. Most of them remained within the Dream, seldom appearing in the mortal world.

The bronze dragons oversaw Azeroth's time flow, moving across different timelines unpredictably. Even among their own kind, they were difficult to track.

As for the black dragons, after Deathwing's betrayal, they became the primary target of the other dragonflights. Most of them either perished or went into hiding, no longer daring to make major moves.

Then there were the golden dragons—dragons that never existed in the original timeline, appearing only due to Alaric's butterfly effect. Their queen ruled over Azeroth's storms and skies.

They operated high above the clouds, battling demons that invaded directly from the atmosphere, making sightings of them by ground-dwelling mortals extremely rare.

Only the red dragons, under Alexstrasza's command, maintained a somewhat normal presence.

Their numbers were relatively higher, and they bore the majority of the responsibility in protecting Azeroth.

It was they who occasionally appeared in mortal lands, leading to widespread legends about dragons.

However, even among the red dragons, only Krasus showed interest in mortals, willing to understand them on a deeper level.

Even so, he lived in secrecy, never discussing dragon matters with mortals.

Because of all this, the dragons in Azeroth were vastly misunderstood by the common folk.

Despite Azeroth being a world of high magic, its people's perception of dragons was no different from that of Earth, a world devoid of magic—a truly ironic situation.

Now, upon hearing the dwarves' and high elves' description of dragons, even the ruthless Black Dragon Princess couldn't help but darken her expression.

"What do you mean by 'big lizard'? What do you mean by 'giant beast'? We dragons are not some lowly creatures!" Onyxia exclaimed loudly after hearing their remarks.

"Just because you've had a little success doesn't mean you can look down on us! If it weren't for the dragons protecting this world, you—"

She cut herself off halfway, perhaps realizing that, as a black dragon, she wasn't in the best position to make such statements.

Even so, her half-spoken words had already revealed something intriguing to the three listeners.

"Archmage Sandor, what she just said about dragons protecting the world—is it true?" Kurdran couldn't wait to ask.

"Yes, of course it's true," Alaric nodded before giving them a general history of the six dragonflights and their roles.

Of course, he left out deeper secrets such as the Titans and the Dragon Soul. But even without those, his explanation was enough to leave the three stunned.

Garona, not being a native of Azeroth, didn't feel much impact. But for Vereesa and Kurdran, their worldview was completely overturned.

It was as if ordinary people living on Earth suddenly discovered that an Avengers-like organization had always been secretly protecting the planet from alien threats, hidden so well that even world governments remained unaware.

Faced with such a revelation, anyone would feel a crisis of identity, as if their entire life had been lived in ignorance.

It took a while for Vereesa and Kurdran to digest the shock. But now, their gaze toward Onyxia had completely changed—from ignorant boldness to awe and reverence.

Naturally, Onyxia keenly noticed this shift and immediately lifted her head smugly.

"Well? Now do you understand my greatness? If you show me proper respect, I might even grant you power and wealth! If you release me, I can ask my father to spare your lives and even offer you a chance to serve the Black Dragonflight… Hey! Why did you hit me?!"

The moment the Black Dragon Princess started getting cocky, she was smacked on the head by the mage.

"You're just a prisoner—what's with the arrogance?" Alaric snorted, withdrawing his hand.

"Your father is nothing more than a stray dog in the eyes of the other dragonflights. If not for his artifact… You haven't forgotten our goal, have you?

Also, I suggest you drop any foolish ideas. Even if you manage to disrupt our infiltration, the moment I reclaim the artifact, your future will be far worse.

So, for your own sake, think carefully before you act."

Hearing this, Onyxia immediately cowered, curling up in a corner without saying another word.

Just as Alaric had warned, if their plan succeeded, Neltharion would lose his only leverage against the dragonflights. At that point, her hopes for freedom would be completely crushed.

Even now, a part of her considered sabotaging Alaric's plan, ensuring its failure.

It was a high-stakes gamble.

If she managed to stop them, she could still dream of breaking free one day.

But if she failed, and Alaric reclaimed the artifact, then her fate would be sealed—and her betrayal would only worsen her future suffering.

On the other hand, if she cooperated with Alaric and proved herself useful, she might have a slightly better future.

So… which should she choose?

Should she bet on stopping their mission? Or should she simply surrender?

Onyxia found herself in a fierce internal struggle.

But in the end, recalling her experience of being captured and sealed away, she chose to submit.

She had no choice—her supposed brilliance had led to her current downfall, and Alaric had left a deep psychological scar on her.

If she turned on him now, who knew what other hidden tricks he had up his sleeve?

As a rising mage, Alaric was not unknown to either Onyxia or her father. They had been keeping an eye on the human-orc war and had heard of his exploits.

But in their arrogance, they had never considered him a true threat.

Yet now, reality had proven otherwise.

This young man was an extraordinary force—his magical prowess was terrifying, his strategic mind impressive, and, worst of all, he had intricate ties with the other dragonflights while possessing deep knowledge of their secrets.

With such a man lurking in the shadows, even Onyxia—who had always feared her father—began to doubt the future of the Black Dragonflight.

And so, she made her choice.
