Chapter 20: Friends

Charlotte's POV

Present Day

When I came home from work the next night I was exhausted, but satisfied. The day's event had gone even better than expected. A local newspaper reporter had stopped by to interview me about the success of "Storytime" and had implied that we would receive front page coverage. Charlene was beyond ecstatic, and I felt as if I was on the right track with my career.

As I pulled up to the house I was mentally calculating how many repairs to the house I would finally be able to afford, when I saw Scarlett huddled on my front porch. I could tell even from a distance that she wasn't her usual flawlessly put-together self. She had her head in her hands, and her beautiful red hair was pulled into a messy ponytail. Scarlett appeared, for a moment, as the lost teenager I had met in that group home so long ago, and it broke my heart.
