Chapter 44: Fires Burning

Charlotte's POV

I was absolutely furious. When I got back to the table I couldn't even speak. Neil tried to ask me what was wrong, and I couldn't even begin to try and answer him. What was I going to say?

"I think it's best if I just go home," I told him with a sigh, "I'm not going to be particularly good company tonight. I apologize." They had, I realized, completely succeeded in destroying my date. I was willing to give Scarlett the benefit of the doubt on this one. I know she would never hurt me deliberately. But I had no idea what to think about Stephen's actions. People could see him, and he had still left me? And now he wanted me back? I didn't understand any of it.

"No apology necessary," Neil replied, brow furrowed in concern, "I don't know what that was, but it didn't look good. Do you need help with those two? Do you want me to tell them to stay away?"
