The Void Devours The Evidence

"So, do tell me, if you don't go to school, what do you do? Do you work for someone or something?" I asked, the question suddenly popping into my head.

"Hmm…I break into people's houses and steal bits of their food when I'm hungry, and sleep on rooftops." Her answer made me stop in my tracks.

"You know, I was gonna say this when I saw you steal those beers, but, like, how the hell haven't you been judged yet? Do you have a heavenly pact or something?" To those words, she simply shrugged her shoulders.

"Hell if I know. Maybe I'm just one of his favorites." She shrugged with a cocky grin, making me wonder how she could make even brashness look cute. She froze up, her grin shifting a little.

"...cute?"

"I'm not gonna talk about this."

"You think I'm cute! Oh, you devil!" She giggled like a maniac, clearly happy to make fun of me. God I hate my life.

Walking out into the hall, I stopped almost immediately.

"Hmm? Something wrong?" Mika cocked her head. Icould tell something was off. I looked over at the hall's end, where we had begun our battle the day before then. The door to my dead neighbor's apartment was closed. That's not surprising, but…I think there was police tape there last night. Yeah, no, when we came back, the place had been taped up so no-one would try and go in. Why wouldn't it be? It was a wrecked part of the building covered in blood and gore. Police always clean up those kinds of messes, whether judgment or car accident or whatever.

I could tell Mika was taking what I was thinking seriously. She placed a hand on my shoulder before moving past me to go to the door herself. Watching her do so slowly increased my heart rate. Her hand gripped the door knob, and she tried to turn it. Locked. I sighed. Wait, did they decide to just lock the place up and take down the tape? No, that's dumb, they already put up the tape, why take it down? I groaned, already tired of this. Surely there's a rational reason for this, or god I at least hope there is-

I was pulled out of my thoughts by Mika slamming her shoulder into the door, breaking it open. I jumped.

"J-jesus, quieter please!" I gave her a violent whisper, but she was definitely not listening. Her eyes were focused forward, wide and concerning.

"Marcus…there's nothing wrong here." What? The fuck is that supposed to mean? Her concerning words pushed me forward. I arrived next to her, and…yeah, she was right. Nothing was wrong there at all. The apartment looked completely put together, as if all evidence of anyone being there had been devoured by the void.

"What the hell?" I walked inside. No blood, no gore, hell, even the pantry was just like it had been before that thing crashed into it. "Okay…god said he had the thing handled this morning. Maybe this is what he meant?" Remembering God's words about handling clean up let my heart settle some. Yes, he must have just remodeled everything and made it as it was before. For some reason though, Mika seemed unconvinced.

"This doesn't feel right at all." Mika whispered, looking over the apartment. "Something weird is happening." She looked over at me, her expression grim. "Marcus…do you think the god you talked to was the one you thought it was?"

"Y-yes, of course he was! He knew my name, he wanted us to fight angels for him! Y-you're just being paranoid…I'm pretty sure…kind of sure…" I felt my confidence waning as her face didn't change. "H-how about you read his mind then?! You were able to up on the roof before!" She seemed to like that idea, and she walked over to the window and cracked it open. Poking her head outside, she stayed like that for a bit. Figuring she was just taking a while, I let my worries settle some.

"Okay…Marcus, we may be in a pretty bad situation." Pulling her head back in, Mika looked grim. "I can't read his mind."

"..." I wanted to make some excuse for why but I couldn't think of a convincing one. A pit had suddenly formed in the bottom of my stomach.

"Oh…okay…n-now what?" She began stroking her chin, before gulping.

"Well, we have an appointment with him today, yeah? I guess that's our ticket to answers."
