19. When things change.

"I can't move my legs," Olivia said again, her voice trembling, her expression growing more panicked. Devon felt a pang of worry but hesitated in showing it, wondering if she was just playing a trick on him.

"Nice try," he smirked, crossing his arms.

But Olivia didn't laugh. Instead, her wide eyes shimmered, tears gathering in them like fragile glass about to shatter. Devon's smirk faded. She was serious.

He immediately crouched down beside her, his hands hovering uncertainly before he finally lifted her with ease. Her body was tense against his arms, and as he placed her back on the bed, he noticed the way one of her legs remained unnaturally stiff.

"Which one?" he asked, his voice softer now.

She hesitated before lightly touching her left leg.

"Where?"

Olivia swallowed hard, her cheeks tinting red as she hesitantly pointed to her upper thigh.
