"Benjamin," Matilda called out.
Hearing his name, Benjamin turned in every direction looking over the street and walkways. He spotted people busy, walking in every direction but toward him. Some of them were in groups huddled together.
"Benjamin!" Matilda called again, this time tapping his driver's box from the street side: He looked down and spied her standing next to the carriage and immediately turned his attention her way. "Ma'am."
"Help me unhitch a horse." Matilda spoke with authority and walked over to the horses. She reached her hand up to pet one, then grabbed the halter around its mouth.
The horse neighed, backing up slightly.
Matilda continued petting the horse and talking gently. "Shush, it is okay, you are okay," she cooed at the horse.
Hugh walked over to them. "Mind filling me in?"
Benjamin climbed down from the driver's bench. "Ma'am, I can get you anywhere in a jiffy! And besides, there are no saddles or riding halters in the carriage!"
