Abandon all hope: Part one

Hugh trembled as he glanced down. “This is not acceptable. This loss of life it could be you next. That cannot be the case. You must arm yourself.” He drew in a shaky breath. You should have constant company for a while. I feel you are most certainly in danger.”

“How do we explain this to her father?” Matilda overcome by the futility, lifted her arms and clenched her hands over her face.

“We tried, Matilda. The constables will happily apprehend us for interfering. We need to stay here, despite any objections, you may have. If you need to take a moment and face away, then do so.” He spoke quietly.

Matilda dropped her hands and stared down at her dress. “I would not leave even if you asked me to.” She placed her hands togather. She applied pressure to the hand that laid against her dress.

“Matilda.” Hugh spoke her name as he stood.

“Yes?” She inhaled a shaky breath.

Hugh took a couple of steps, moving in front of her. He held up his arms and wrapped them around her.
