Chapter 29 - Zach's Influence
One week later, in a place not that far from the base, Zach together with five police officers could be found looking over fifty other people. Looking closely, these people were young probably of the same age as him seeing Max and Rose were among the group.
For the past week, the base has now 300 plus people after survivors keep on coming after hearing such place from Max and Rose's venture outside. The people who were with him now are all the idle ones back at the base since the work has become smaller since everyone already had a simple house.
In fact, the task that Zach gave them for the time being was to create a wall that surrounded the base. It was something unnecessary to do but just to be safe, Zach still had them to do it while their families were doing housework.
Meanwhile, the place Zach is now in the new place of their shooting practice area seeing three large tables behind him laying a lot of guns waiting for someone to hold them. Guns ranging from handguns to heavy ones were there and at the same time, there were several bolo knives mixed in them.
Max and Rose were quite surprised after being guided to this place since all the people who were with them were the ones responsible for going outside and reaching out to other survivors. They should have already been out right now, but it looked like they were doing something different today.
"I appreciate all your work up until now but from today onwards, you will no longer do such a thing since from the reports that you've given back, you have already covered the whole city. It was now to the survivors' judgment out there if they would believe and come to this place." Zach announced as he looked at the people of his age.
"Now. I have gathered you all here today for another matter. To all of you here, I will not force everyone to do the new task I will be giving you. I will respect your decision if you decide not to join but the least thing I could say is that this is also for your own good." Zach said as he planned on persuading these people to start doing exercises and shooting practices with him every day.
"Before you decide, I would like to say that what you have to focus on now is to simply start exercising and these police officers here will help you use guns. If you ask why would I give you such a task well I will tell you now. The reason is simple and that is I just want you to do it. There's no other particular reason." Zach followed. Truthfully, what he said really was the truth as he really couldn't just say that there might be something they could use it for in the future knowing that they might really not believe it.
Zach, however, was different since he was 90 % sure that something would happen at the end of these calamities. He can't say for sure what it is but as an author and a reader, he already has many ideas that were running on his mind of the possible events that might happen after all of these catastrophic events.
"Now. Who wants to join and will not? I repeat. This is not mandatory. I'll respect everyone's decisions." Zach lastly said before looking at them from which he saw them started talking to each other. He could see that many were hesitating especially the women upon seeing the guns while the men were quite excited and kept on eyeing what was on the table.
After thirty seconds, no one had decided not to join seeing everyone remained in the area which made Zach smile. He didn't know whether to laugh or not but he could see that some of them were just forced probably due to his influence thinking that they might not properly live if they refused him however, he didn't point them out knowing that it would only make them bad.
"Good. The first thing we will do is run. Follow me. We should at least run for about 10 kilometers a day." Zach said. He no longer waited for them as he started running with a smile on his face. In fact, he could kill two birds in one stone by doing this. First, he would no longer be alone while doing his daily mission though he planned on going out again after these, and second, is that through these activities, he could also help these brats to properly look after their bodies.
Seeing Zach, Max and Rose then followed from which they started calling the others to follow and not to be left behind. Meanwhile, the five police officers were feeling awkward by the sudden announcement of Zach. They don't know what is this all about as they only follow orders. They have been reprimanded not to do anything funny by Jenny, Anna, and Carl saying that Zach wasn't a young man but a man who had killed 8 police just because they abused their power. Hearing such a thing, they couldn't help but shut their mouth and remained good.
After having a 10-kilometer run, Zach then started doing push-ups, curl-ups, and squats according to the number of repetitions the system mission was. Giving them time to rest, he then told everyone to start looking for their gun and their first task was to familiarize handguns first. After that, breakfast then was given to them.
Allocating an hour of practicing guns, Zach gave them another hour to practice swinging the bolo knife and it made them all look like youths who were training to become a fighter or something. After that, their first day finally comes to an end and they can now spend and waste their time doing what they want throughout the whole day.
Zach, however, still didn't leave and remained in the shooting area still continuing to practice. In fact, he no longer needs such a thing as his precision has long been tested by Jenny, but he wouldn't want to be complacent as he wanted his skills not to get rusted thinking that he doesn't know when he would need it. Only after his mom called for lunch did Zach finally put everything inside his inventory and walk back to base.
Getting inside the house, Zach was greeted by Jenny followed by Zoey, Hannah, Shiela, and Vanessa who were now busy preparing the food on the dining table. He then just smiled as he joined them at the table from which they started eating lunch.
The table was very lively as there were seven cheeky children with them laughing while talking about what they had learned earlier since they had been taught by teachers like Hannah in their classroom.
Meanwhile, Vanessa and the others were talking to each other especially looking after Jenny whom they kept asking how she was feeling right now. Vanessa was the one who was too excited as she could no longer wait to carry her grandchild as she was already getting old.
On the other hand, Zach could see that their life had really turned for the better but to him, there was still something missing and that was when he decided to talk it out secretly with his mother later in order not to break the mood on the table.
Following that, each one of them then started minding their own business as Hannah took the children out of the house since it was time for them to learn again, while Shiela started teaching Zoey about what she had learned being a nurse leaving Vanessa inside the house cleaning and the plates that they have used with Zach helping her beside her.
"Mom. I want to leave again and try my luck to find dad." Zach suddenly said what he wanted to say while cleaning the plate with a clean cloth and putting it on the tray. He then just took another plate and did the same thing while waiting for her answer.
On the other hand, Vanessa stopped for a moment after hearing Zach before she continued washing the plate. In fact, she has already started accepting that her husband is already dead since it has been quite a long time since the calamity started. If not for Zach's words, she might have really forgotten about it.
"Are you sure about it?" Vanessa replied and asked. She knew her son well and she knew how he had become the leader and at the same time the savior of these people. As a mother, what he was doing was making her proud but she also knew that he had many responsibilities to do and that is what was making her worry.
"Yes, mom. And don't worry as my leaving this time will be smooth since I have found a ride." Zach answered. He didn't know if the system had pity on him but after getting the boat he was hoping to have, the next day after that, he got a motorbike with it. What's the most surprising thing is that both of them could be put inside the inventory which was very convenient.
"Just be careful and I don't why you wanted to talk about it only to me but you need to tell the others too especially Jenny." Vanessa replied before finally having every plate clean and was now cleaning their sink to finish everything up.
"I'll tell them later, mom." Zach smiled before also finishing his job. With that, the two then just talk to each other for a while before finally heading out wanting to socialize with the people outside.
Time quickly went by and night then came into the world. After having dinner with everyone, Zach then told Jenny, Zoey, and Hannah about his plan to head out again for reasons that he wanted to find his and Zoey's dad. Jenny and Hannah didn't have much reaction but Zoey took it seriously as she looked for their mom and convinced her that she wanted to come along.
