Once she was home and parked she sat for a moment trying to collect her thoughts but the suspense was killing her. As she stepped out of the car, she protectively clutched the bag and box to her chest. Just before her hand touched the doorknob, panic set in.
On the night of Kemal's change it had been late, and she was just coming home from having drinks. Chloé remembered glancing up at the sky and admitting that she was happy. Her life was as close to perfect as it ever had been before. She had walked up on those concrete steps, pressed the thumb latch door handle, and entered hell.
Now, the door resembled the same stage for the scene as it had that Halloween night. Apprehension filled her. The smell of the place, the lighting, and the same sounds in the street surrounded her making her dizzy. She'd need to face whatever was about to happen, regardless.
