A Bet and a Little Chit-chat

As soon as we got home, Fred and I changed out of our church wear and started doing our chores. We were working so fast and seriously that our parents thought it was because of the movies. Little did they know that it was because of a bet Fred and I had.

Fred and I timed ourselves to finish our chores in an hour. We had a bet that whoever finished his or her chores first will take the other's meat during lunch. I had a lot more work to do than Fred given that I was older than him, which was a disadvantage for me but I still went on with the bet because it would help me not to slack off and end up spending a lot of time doing my chores.

By noon, Fred and I were done with the chores and we were watching a movie. Fred was meant to make the beds and sweep the rooms but Mom had already cleaned their room because she said she couldn't wait for us to start cleaning and she also helped me with cleaning the kitchen before she went on to make breakfast and prepare lunch.

I lost to Fred. I was still struggling with the sitting room when he finished sweeping.

We normally do the house cleaning on Saturdays but we had to do it today because of the exam yesterday.

I watched with sorrow as Fred took one of my meat during lunch. He took the drumstick and left me with the chicken wing. I didn't know we would be having our meal with chicken, I was hoping it would be beef and I won't mind giving it to him.

You all needed to see the way he chewed at the meat aggressively in front of me. I lowkey cried. Nobody likes to share their drumstick with anyone let alone give it out for free.

Our parents noticed it but they didn't say a word.

"A deal is a deal. It ought to be respected." They would normally say whenever we reported each other.

Dad kept to his promise and did not bother us for the rest of the day. His friend Mr. Stan came over to see us and they stayed in the courtyard, saying that they wanted to receive fresh air.

Fred and I were left all alone as Mom was already preparing to go to the hospital to work the night shift as she had swapped with a Co-worker to be able to go to the exam with me.

Fred and I were watching "Avatar, the last air bender" and when we got to the part of his final battle with fire Lord Ozai, the power supply got interrupted.

"Heei!, why now?" Fred shouted as he hit his hands on the sofa repeatedly.

I just hissed as I was short of words. I hissed and murmured till I got fed up. I laid down on the sofa and started feeling sleepy but I didn't want to sleep, lest what happened yesterday night will happen to me again.

"Sis, let's go to Katie's house," Fred suggested to me after a while.

"That's true, I was even supposed to visit her today," I said as I remembered that she visited yesterday.

"Let's go and tell Mom and Dad before we leave."

Fred and I were soon on our way to Katie's house after informing our parents. We didn't necessarily need their permission as that place had become our second home likewise to them.

If you are to look for us, you will find us in Katie's place and also find Katie and the twins in our place.

"Good afternoon ma, good afternoon sir," Fred and I greeted Katie's parents.

"Good afternoon my dears," Katie's mom responded.

"How are your parents?" She asked us.

"They are fine." Fred and I chorused.

"That's good. Have a seat." Katie's father said to us.

"Katie!" Her mom called out to her. "Your friend is here to see you."

Katie didn't respond and neither did her brothers respond.

"It seems like they are in the backyard." Katie's father said.

"Elsie, Fred,  you should go and join them there." Katie's mom said to us. "I'll have Katie bring over your refreshments."

"Please, tell Katie that I want to see her." Her mom added.

"Yes ma,"  I replied.

Katie and her siblings were playing dodgeball in the backyard when we got there.

"You finally came?" Katie asked me but it was more of a statement.

"Yes, I heard you were missing me badly so I came to see you," I replied as I gave her a side hug.

"Who missed you?" Katie sneered as she pushed me aside.

"Lest I forget, your mom wants to see you," I said to her.

"Why does she want to see me now?" Katie asked me as she sighed.

"Don't be a disobedient child, go and answer your mom's call," I said as I poked her cheeks.

"She has been calling you for a while now."

Katie left to answer her mother's call as I waited for her.  Fred and the twins continued playing dodgeball.

Katie came back with a bowl of chin chin and a bottle of fruit juice. We both sat down as we ate the snacks and chatted away.  The boys weren't willing to stop playing so we let them be.
