The Not So Regular Old Joe, Jared

The plane wushes through the clear sky with the destination being utterly spectacular.

Jared had spent the last couple months saving up money to go on holiday. For most of his life, he felt like he had no purpose, no direction and no goals. He felt as if he was hollow inside. The goal of this world was to obtain money. Money made the world go round and money can get you essentially anything while lack of money will cost you everything. He was stuck in a dead end job he was disinterested in and after working for fifteen years there, his soul had eroded even more than it already had. His coworker suggested he should take a break and go somewhere nice. He booked a flight to Italy and hoped this could bring some spice into his boring repetitive life.

A voice from the speakers sounded out.

Pilot: Attention passengers.

The tone and voice dropped suddenly. Jared wondered if the Pilot was doing his best Jigsaw impression.

Pilot: Would you like to play a game?

A thick purple gas filled the plane as Jared held his breath wondering what was going on. He looked around to see passengers passing out. He looked in his jacket pocket and grabbed a water bottle pouring some water into his mask and wearing it to block out the gas.

As he left his seat, he saw what looked like soldiers in clad in black uniforms armed to the teeth with body armour and guns. A soldier spotted him and shouted to him to get down. He saw the soldier start to raise his gun and by instinct, Jared grabbed a plastic cup full of water and splashing it onto the soldier's helmet. He moved forward, taking off his backpack and using the strap to get behind the soldier and strangle him to death.

He sensed another one behind him and made the choice to end this quickly as more were heading to his location.

Soldier 2: Get down!

He quickly snapped the neck of the soldier he was strangling and tried to pick up his gun but he felt a sharp stinging pain of his arm. He turned around to see a tranquilliser dart im his left shoulder and his vision darkened. He managed to stand up though and dragged his way to the other soldiers. More darts were sent in his direction. He eventually collapsed after 765 sedative darts where fired into his body.

Darkness. A familiar colour. A lot like his soul.

Then a familiar mechanical humming. Then a bright light filled his vision.

A massive open space. The walls, ceiling and floor was made out of grey metallic material. Above him was a large window that allowed light to shine through. He could see the clear blue sky and clouds passing by.

Where the hell was he?

He inspected his body. He was wearing a black jumpsuit and had a name tag where his breast pocket was. "013" it said.

"Interesting" thought Jared. Any other person would probably be freaking out right now but Jared was strangely calm. Even he didn't know why. He guessed it might be the adrenaline or a side effect of the darts but either way, he felt like he should have a more intense reaction than this.

Jared was just excited that at least something, anything, interesting happened. Something other than the mundanity of his regular life. Jared entertained the idea that he became a death game protagonist and is about to enter his villain arc but he laughed the idea off.

It was just so... interesting.
