A Plan for a Future

After breakfast, I lay May down to sleep, and make my way back to the others.

I sigh as I sit at the table, and rub my forehead gently with my fingertips.

Roland watches me with a critical eye, taking a swig of his drink in a way that looks deliberate to me, before he finally speaks. "You thinking about how hard it'll be to tell her goodbye?"

"Is that what I look like?"

Lucas eyes me. "I can't say you're hard to read right now."

I press my lips together and shake my head.

"All the people who should care about her keep betraying her and abandoning her...even if it's just because they die, how is that going to matter to her?"

It doesn't matter to me if everyone else cares that these people died.

All that matters to me is that May kept asking, 'where is my mommy? When will mommy be back?'

What matters to me is..

What will life be like for May when we're gone?

When there's no one.
