"Yes, me," Alonso responded shamelessly leaving Natalie dumbfounded.
She shook her head in disbelief, still half-expecting him to say that he was only joking and that he had nothing to do with the hotel's mistake.
"There is no reason for you to feel uncomfortable at all. You should simply enjoy the suite that was booked for you for the night," was what he said instead.
"So… You're telling me that you went through all this trouble to stage this, all of it just to get me to travel from L.A to this desert? Did I get it right?"
Please say no.
"Yes," he nodded, looking proud of himself.
Cursing creatively in her mind, Natalie began searching for the exit.
"I wouldn't have been able to do this without your brother's help."
Brother? "Who are you talking about!" she squeaked as she looked up at him.
His eyes clouded, "That young man who plays the guitar, Kevin."
Feeling a headache creeping over her, Natalie clenched her fists against her temples and squeezed her eyes shut, contemplating the idea of killing Kevin right after she got rid of the current lunatic in front of her. She opened her eyes again and stared at Alonso Valois who was observing her carefully as if she were a hamster running on a wheel inside a cage.
"...Why would the two of you do this to me?"
"Because you decided to be the judge and the jury, and then you rested my case. Because I wanted to give both of us a fair chance to get to know each other."
Unable to believe the situation Kevin had placed her in, she turned her attention back to the receptionist with a grimace.
"Cancel my booking immediately; I'm getting out of here."
Turning around, she started walking away with angry steps.
"Your handbag?" Alonso called from behind.
"You can keep it!" She shouted without looking back; all her important papers, money, and cards were in her purse anyhow. It took her the short distance between the reception and the glass door to realize that cars didn't reach this place.
"Stupid hotel," she murmured under her breath as soon as she went out, quickly deciding that she was mad enough to follow the road signs on her two feet. "Stupid Kevin."
Shoving her sweaty hand in her pocket, she retrieved the traitor's phone and called him.
"Hello?" Kevin said in a careful tone after the first ring.
Oh, the cowardice of betrayal.
"I'm on my way. Just wait until I get to you, Kevin Donell. Prepare yourself to receive a kick where it hurts a traitor like you the most!"
"I can explain," he said nervously.
"Shut up! Kevin! There is nothing you can do that can explain why my best friend decided he can just humiliate me and throw me under the bus like this!"
"Look, I had to do it."
"Why!" She shouted.
"Because you looked like a kitten that had been rained on when we were researching him the other day!"
"What kitten? What the hell are you talking about!"
"I'm talking about that disappointment. I missed seeing that look on your face! You never look disappointed because you never let anyone close enough to disappoint you!"
She removed the phone away from her ear and glared at it, He still has the nerve to raise his voice after selling me out like that? Gritting her teeth, she pressed the phone back to her ear, determined to get to the bottom of the matter before she killed Kevin.
"... Are you telling me that you went to him and suggested all of this?"
"No! Of course not! What do you take me for? The man called me and we met up in a café close to my house. He explained that his intentions are serious towards you. I tested him; he is legit."
"What intentions? What test!" she exclaimed as she stomped her sinking feet further into the sand.
"I am telling you, I think the man fell hard for you. I mean, what's not to fall for? You're just perfect."
"Stop it with the sweet talk! Let me just put my hands on you, Kevin, I swear, I will make you wish we never went to the same preschool."
"Natalie! A man like him can have his pick, all right? He wants something more from you. I suggest you give him a chance to at least change your mind about him. Just be reasonable, go back to that hotel and don't wander in the desert like a crazy person, you hear me? Call me once you're at your suite."
Holding herself back from throwing Kevin's stupid phone as far as she could, she puffed her cheeks like a blowfish and pressed the red button, cancelling the phone call too many times than necessary.
