As the group of male instructors and boys walked down the long corridor, their casual chatter softened the early morning stillness. The light spilling through the large windows illuminated their path, but their march came to a halt at the sight of two figures ahead. Standing in the centre of the corridor were none other than Director Hye-su and her secretary, Hae-won.
Director Hye-su was a picture of composed authority, her sharp eyes scanning the group with an intensity that could silence the boldest voice. Beside her, Hae-won stood with a clipboard pressed against her chest, her demeanour quiet but alert, much like a shadow to her superior.
The instructors immediately straightened their postures.
"Good morning, Director Hye-su," Instructor Dong-soo greeted, his voice steady despite the underlying tension that seemed to grip the air.
"Good morning, Director," the other two instructors echoed, nodding respectfully.
Director Hye-su's gaze moved deliberately, scrutinizing the boys. Her eyes lingered momentarily on each student before she returned her attention to the instructors.
"Morning jog?" she asked, her tone neutral but carrying an edge of expectation.
"Yes, ma'am," Instructor Ji-woo replied. "We just completed a few laps around the obstacle course."
Director Hye-su gave a small, approving nod.
"Good. The girls have already been informed to proceed to the dining hall for breakfast. You all should do the same. Clean up and prepare for the day ahead."
The group responded with a collective, "Yes, ma'am," before continuing down the corridor. The boys kept their heads low, sneaking only fleeting glances at the imposing woman. As they walked away, faint murmurs among them reflected their awe and unease about being in her presence.
Behind them, Director Hye-su turned to Hae-won, speaking in a low voice. They started walking down a different hallway, their heels clicking against the polished floor with a cadence of authority.
Unseen by almost everyone, a shadow lingered in a corner where another corridor branched off. A figure stood silently, his form concealed in the dim light of the recess. The moment the boys and instructors passed, he emerged—a man dressed in plain, unassuming clothes. His expression was unreadable, but his movements were deliberate as he slipped into the path that Hye-su and Hae-won had taken, his steps quiet as a whisper.
The atmosphere shifted subtly, the air growing heavier with the weight of something unknown. The figure followed at a calculated distance, his focus locked on the Director and her secretary.
The boys hurried back to their quarters, eager to freshen up after the unexpected morning jog. They splashed cold water on their faces, brushing off the lingering fatigue. Conversations buzzed among them, mostly about the unnerving presence of Director Hye-su.
"She's intense," muttered Kang-dae as he tugged on his shirt.
"She didn't even say much, and I still feel like I failed some test," Joon-ho replied, shaking his head.
"Let's not be late," Min-jae reminded them. "If she's already sizing us up, showing up late to breakfast won't help."
With that, the boys quickly dressed and made their way to the dining hall.
As they stepped inside, the warm aroma of freshly prepared food greeted them—a stark contrast to the usual bland, nutrient-packed meals. Their eyes widened as they took in the spread: scrambled eggs, grilled sausages, buttered toast, fresh fruit, and even pancakes. It was a feast that none of them expected.
The girls were already seated at two tables, chatting casually over their plates. Jin-kyong waved them over.
"Took you long enough. We were starting to think you all fell asleep again."
"Very funny," Kyung-mi said dryly as the boys joined the tables.
The group dug in eagerly, the difference in quality not lost on them.
"Cheat meals," Baek-hyeon said between bites of pancake. "What's the occasion?"
"Maybe the instructors are scared stiff of Director Hye-su," Chin-hwa guessed. "Wouldn't want her thinking we're being mistreated."
"It's not impossible," In-su added thoughtfully. "But hey, let's not complain. This beats anything we've had so far."
At a table to the side, the instructors sat together, their posture unusually formal. They exchanged quiet words, glancing now and then at the students.
Meanwhile, Director Hye-su and Hae-won occupied a smaller table in the corner of the dining hall. They weren't eating, having already had breakfast elsewhere, but their presence alone kept the room hushed. Director Hye-su's sharp eyes scanned the students with a calculating gaze, as though observing not just their eating habits but their very essence.
"I thought we escaped her eyes for at least during our time here?" Hana whispered to Soo-jin.
"I don't know," Soo-jin replied. "She has all the power to be where she pleases."
"Just eat," Min-jae said firmly. "We don't need to give her any more reasons to scrutinize us."
The students continued their meal, the atmosphere hovering between the pleasure of a rare treat and the weight of being under such intense observation. Even the instructors, who were usually more relaxed during meals, seemed cautious, their laughter and banter subdued.
Despite the tension, the food provided a small comfort—a momentary reprieve from the rigorous routine of their training. But with Director Hye-su in the room, everyone understood that this was just the calm before the storm.
The dining hall buzzed softly with the clinking of utensils and the murmur of student conversations, but the table where the instructors and Director Hye-su sat was notably quieter. The students couldn't hear what was being said, but they couldn't help stealing glances in that direction, curiosity flickering in their eyes.
At the head of the table, Director Hye-su sat with perfect poise, her back straight and her hands resting lightly on the polished surface. Her sharp gaze moved between the instructors as they spoke. Beside her, Hae-won jotted something down in a notebook, her expression a mask of professionalism.
Instructor Dong-soo, usually confident and boisterous, appeared tense. He leaned slightly forward as he spoke, his brow furrowed and his hands occasionally gesturing for emphasis. Instructor Ji-woo sat beside him, nodding along but maintaining a cautious demeanour, his lips pressed into a thin line.
On the other side of the table, Instructor Seung-hyun had his arms crossed over his chest, his expression unreadable but his posture indicating a mix of defensiveness and focus. Instructor Min-ji and Instructor Hye-won were quieter, chiming in occasionally, their faces more neutral yet tinged with a hint of concern.
"They look… intense," Tae-young murmured, his eyes fixed on the table across the room.
"Is it me, or does Instructor Dong-soo look like he's being scolded?" Jin-kyong whispered, leaning slightly toward In-su.
"Hard to say," In-su replied, his gaze flicking back to his plate briefly before returning to the scene. "It's like trying to read a silent movie."
"You think it's about us?" Hana asked, her voice low but laced with curiosity.
"Could be," Kang-dae said, glancing over subtly. "But it might also be something bigger. Look at Director Hye-su's face. That's not just casual chit-chat."
"She always looks like that, though," Min-jae pointed out, pushing a piece of fruit around on his plate. "Cold and calculating."
"You think it's about the World NexaRealm Championship?" Soo-jin speculated, her voice barely audible.
"Maybe," Chin-hwa added. "She's probably checking if we're even worth the effort. Makes sense to review our progress."
From the instructors' table, Director Hye-su's lips moved as she spoke, her tone calm yet authoritative. Instructor Dong-soo seemed to flinch slightly, his mouth twitching in a way that suggested he wasn't entirely comfortable with whatever she had said. Instructor Hye-won nodded, her expression tightening for a moment before smoothing out again.
"They're definitely talking about something serious," Joon-ho said, narrowing his eyes in thought. "Maybe Director Hye-su isn't happy with how the training's going."
"Or maybe it's about that figure we saw earlier," Baek-hyeon suggested.
"Let's not jump to conclusions. We don't know anything for sure," Kyung-mi shook his head.
The students tried to focus on their breakfast, but the tension at the instructors' table was palpable. It hung in the air like an invisible weight, making it hard to ignore. Even the normally lighthearted atmosphere among the students felt dampened, as though everyone subconsciously understood the gravity of the situation.
"Whatever it is," Kang-dae finally said, his deep voice steady. "It'll come out sooner or later. Let's just focus on what we can control."
The students nodded, exchanging uneasy glances before returning to their plates, their curiosity momentarily subdued but far from extinguished.
The meal continued in uneasy silence as the students made a concerted effort to act like they weren't scrutinizing the instructors' table. Now and then, someone would take a glance, only to look away just as quickly when one of the instructors shifted in their seat. The tension was thick, and even the rich flavours of the breakfast didn't fully distract them.
As the last few bites were taken and plates emptied, Director Hye-su suddenly stood, her movement fluid and commanding. The instructors immediately followed suit, their expressions carefully neutral. Without addressing the students, the group exited the dining hall, leaving behind an air of mystery that only deepened the students' curiosity. The silence they left in their wake was heavy, and as the door swung shut behind them, the students exchanged knowing looks, silently agreeing that whatever was going on, it wasn't over yet.
