Letting them face the reality of their situation earlier on was far better than lying only to break their hearts later.
"Jillian," Brayden called. He shook his head as a signal for her to stop right there.
"Actually, that day at the mall was my first time meeting both of you. Although I don't know why you girls call me mother but I want to say that you have gotten the wrong person. I am not your mother," Jillian declared, ignoring Brayden's signal.
"Mom also thinks we are bad. She is even denying us," Marley murmured. She let go of Jillian's hand and shifted away from her.
"I am telling the truth Marley and this has nothing to do with whether you girls are bad or goo…" the words refused to form as soon as Monalisa waved in front of her eyes the pendant she had just ripped off from her neck.
"See, you are our mommy. Dad gave that pendant to me. He said that is our mother and that is you," Monalisa who has always been praised for having a sharp brain for her age declared, still waving the pendant at Jillian's face.
"Wait, this is indeed me but the funniest thing is that I don't remember ever meeting this man, not to mention taking a picture with him. What is going on?" Jillian murmured looking at Brayden for an answer to the ridiculous turn out of the event.
When Marley and Monalisa called her mother at the mall and held onto her tightly, she had thought that girls were playing a prank on her.
Now that things had turned out this way she didn't know what to believe anymore.
"Let's talk outside," Brayden informed.
"But…"
"I won't let your mother get away. You can trust uncle to return her to you exactly as you gave her to me so don't worry," Brayden spoke to the displeased girls who were about to protest.
As soon as they got outside, the angry Jillian who was afraid to talk in front of the kids confronted Brayden.
"What was that about there? Why did Monalisa have the picture of a woman that looks exactly like me? Besides, I haven't met the man in the picture before. Do you mind explaining to me what happened?" Jillian demanded sternly
"Marl and Lisa's mother's name was Ashley. You share an uncanny resemblance to her. If you can still remember, I called you Ashley upon getting a glimpse of your face at the mall that day. The girls also addressed you as mother for the same reason," Brayden explained calmly even though Jillian was a little bit impatient.
"I am my mother's only child, so why would there be another woman who looks exactly like me?" Jillian demanded fiercely.
"Also, you only said that the girls never grew up to see their mother. What exactly did you mean by that? What happened to her…"
"This a secret of my family, I can't share it with you but I promise to tell you everything you wanna know if you agree to take care of Marl and Lisa during the period our home is being repaired," Brayden gave Jillian his words, desperately hoping that she would agree since this was his only shot at convincing her.
"And why are you so obsessed with scouting me to be your babysitter even after I told you that I am not fond of kids?" Jillian demanded for the main reason Brayden kept trying to make her agree to his terms.
"Because that was my demised brother's only wish for his girls in the last six years," Brayden confessed at last.
"Although he tried his best not to let Marl and Lisa feel the gap of not having a mother, he still wished that they would experience the joy of having a mother just like other kids of their age…" Brayden trailed off.
They might have been countries apart but not even the distance could affect their closeness.
Thank goodness for cell phones and laptops, they were able to make video calls seamlessly.
"You might say that you are not their mother but a stranger who has the same face as their mother, that doesn't really matter. What counts is that Marl and Lisa had already seen you as their mother since the moment they set eyes on you. They might be naughty and overbearing at times, but trust me when I say they will treat you like a Queen. That will show you how much they yearned to have a mother," Brayden tried harder to make Jillian change her mind.
"I know you have a good reason for insisting on this. Believe me, I also feel bad for Marley and Monalisa but I really can't do this. Apart from my dislike for kids, I have a few things to consider; like my relationship with my fiance. What will I tell my mother and friends when they hear two little girls calling me mother?" Jillian voiced her other concerns.
"My mother is super sensitive to talk about children and pregnancy especially if it concerns me. She might die from a heart attack if she ever witnesses Marley and Monalisa call me mother…"
"If that is your concern I can tell them to cut down on addressing you as mom. I am sure I will not have a hard time getting them to agree to my terms," Brayden countered Jillian's worry as if he had already foreseen this coming.
Brayden refused to give up notwithstanding the number of times Jillian turned down his offer.
Thanks to his experience in dealing with different kinds of people for so many years, he was able to get the reluctant lady to finally agree to his offer.
"Don't worry Miss Jillian, I will give all that which I promised to you. And not just that but I will make sure that you don't regret this deal," Brayden assured her.
Words alone could not describe how happy he was that he would be free like a bird for the next few days.
There will be no Marley nor Monalisa to make his nights a living hell.
