Javier entered the room, and his sudden presence got Helen startled. He never expected he would come back so soon.
He narrowed his eyes at her.
"What are you doing here?"
"I...I am here to see Yvonne," she stammered. "Look at the way she is laying so lifeless," she continued, her voice quivering as if on the verge of tears.
But before any tears could fall, Javier cut her off.
"Get out," he ordered.
"Why are you so mean to me?" Helen protested. "Was it because I was going to help her escape? Why are you stopping me from seeing her?"
Javier's patience was wearing thin. He stepped closer, his tone firm. "I don't want you here for now; just leave."
Helen hesitated for a moment, then, with a scowl, she left the room, shooting a glance at Javier before slamming the door behind her. Javier sighed and sat down.
His phone rang, and Javier glanced at the screen, revealing his mother's name.
"Where are you? We are outside your house."
"You came here? You should have given me a heads-up before coming," he said as he touched his forehead.
"Why should I tell you when I am coming?" she said. "So, tell me where you are."
"I am at the hospital."
"Hospital? Why are you there? Were you shot?"
"No, I wasn't. Yvonne got into an accident."
"Really?" she said. "Okay, we are coming."
Thirty minutes later, they arrived at the hospital. Javier led them outside Yvonne's room.
"Why is she here?" Javier asked, referring to Mirabelle, his sister.
"She wanted to see you," his mother explained. "By the way, is she in a coma?"
"Yes," Javier replied.
"That is so sad."
"No, I think it is karma that bites her ass."
Javier and his mother exchanged puzzled looks.
"Mom, you shouldn't have brought your daughter here," Javier said, pointing to Mirabelle.
"Why are you calling her my 'daughter'? Is she not your sister?"
"No, I don't think so because her mouth runs like a parrot. I think she is probably adopted."
"You are the one who is adopted," she said. "Wasn't it because of her that you didn't come to my wedding? If you had come, at least my husband would have realized that his wife has a brother who is not to be messed with. But you didn't attend, and that was the reason why he cheated on me with those whores."
"Stop this bickering," she said, then faced Mirabelle. "What you just said was uncalled for? Look, I am not trying to blame you for your husband's cheating; didn't I warn you about it like the good mother I am? Your husband will always complain to me and tell me how you have been making his life miserable, so I am not even surprised by what he did."
"So, you are blaming me?"
Her mom sighed.
"I can see that you are with your favorite son, so whatever I do is an eyesore to you." Mirabelle shook her head. "I got it."
Mirabelle left the hospital.
"Look at her; I can't even talk to her. If I talk to her, she gets angry."
Not attending Mirabelle's wedding put their relationship in a strain, and Javier was not about to help her with anything since she hasn't apologized for what she did years ago.
"Mom, I am glad you are here," he said. "I don't trust anyone with Yvonne now that she is vulnerable, so can I trust you to stay with her if I am not there?"
"Yes, you can. She is like my daughter."
His mother entered the room, and she stayed close to her.
"I have somewhere to go, so stay here with her."
His mother nodded her head. Javier left, and his mother couldn't believe that she would meet her like this. The last time she met Yvonne was a year ago, and she was a happy person.
His mother was praying that Yvonne should be alright. She sat down and held Yvonne's hand.
"Yvonne, you need to get well so we can go shopping together," she said happily before her expression changed. "I hope you forgive me; I saw your grandfather is dead in the news and how someone committed suicide and blamed you, but I never once called you to check how you have been. Am I a bad mother?"
Yvonne opened her eyes, and his mother saw it. As she was going to call the doctor, Yvonne held her hand.
Yvonne shook her head.
"I am glad you are awake; I thought you would never be awake."
Yvone smiled.
"I..for..give you."
Tears fell from Javier's mother's eyes.
"Can you do me a favor?"
"What is it?"
Yvonne told his mother to come close, and she whispered in her ear.
Javier's mother was surprised.
"No, no."
