Augustine narrowed his eyes, taking two steps back. He dipped his hand inside his pocket and stared closely to be sure it was Victor. He knew his son very well, and Victor would never kneel before him, even if his life depended on it.

"Please help me, Father," Victor repeated, with his forehead touching the ground. His jaw tightened, but he didn't have a choice. It was now or never, and Maya could only hold out for so long. He couldn't bear to see her suffer, even if it was just for a few minutes.

Augustine stood there silently, watching his son, then threw his head back and laughed. A hearty laugh that shook his entire body.
