Two ghosts were comparing their miseries, creating a fierce and lively quarrel.
Ye Shu and Liu Youyou were bewildered, exchanging glances. Seeing that they were still arguing, Ye Shu approached Liu Youyou and whispered, "Are these really ghosts? Could they be something else?"
"Definitely ghosts. They've been feasting on blood rice. Besides, they are weak. Now, I feel relieved," Liu Youyou chuckled. She wasn't afraid anymore. These two ghosts, being both amusing and weak, posed no threat to her. Moreover, she had a brilliant idea, whispering it to Ye Shu.
Ye Shu frowned, "Isn't that risky? What if they aren't afraid of you?"
"They will be. Just watch. I'll make ghost-keeping easy for you, so you won't tire yourself out," Liu Youyou said confidently, taking a bold step forward. The two ghosts were still quarreling, completely oblivious to her presence.
With a little cough, Liu Youyou's two shining white tails suddenly appeared behind her, illuminating the surroundings.
Her fox spirit aura scattered, making Ye Shu dizzy and unable to withstand Liu Youyou's aura. The two ghosts, frightened, stopped arguing and clung to each other, trembling. Liu Youyou turned back, smirking at Ye Shu, who gave her a thumbs up in acknowledgment: impressive.
The two ghosts stared in terror at Liu Youyou. Being the lowest-level wandering spirits, they were defenseless against a two-tailed fox spirit like her.
"Benevolent lady, spare us. We were just passing by. Please forgive any misunderstanding," the green-haired ghost, more clever, sweetly pleaded, while the bald one quickly added, "Beautiful lady, don't be angry. Let's talk. My whole family is willing to apologize to you."
Liu Youyou disdainfully responded, "We are here to summon ghosts. What are you doing, causing trouble and scaring away the other ghosts?"
The green-haired ghost quickly replied, "Beautiful lady, there is no cemetery or crematorium in the south of the city. Most spirits have gone to the north and east to compete for yin energy. We, two brothers, cannot compete with others, so we can only wander and scavenge for food in these places."
Understanding their predicament, Ye Shu relaxed. Signaling Liu Youyou to retract her tails, Liu Youyou complied. The spirits caught their breath, still in shock.
Ye Shu, feeling more at ease, approached them and said, "Don't be afraid. I have some questions for you."
As they realized he was human, the ghosts were relieved, yet with Liu Youyou behind him, they dared not act rashly.
"Brother, feel free to ask, and little brother will tell you everything he knows," said the green-haired ghost sincerely.
Ye Shu, curious about ghosts and considering keeping them, asked, "Are all ghosts like you, or are there differences compared to famous ones like Sadako?"
Sadako, well-known to people during their lives, had made an impact on these two ghosts. They nodded and shook their heads in response, making it confusing for Ye Shu.
"What do you mean? Explain it, green hair."
Ye Shu insisted on hearing from the green-haired ghost. After some preparation, he began explaining.
"Brother, ghosts come in many types. Like us, who are foolish enough to cause our own death, we don't pose a threat. But ghosts who died unjustly, such as murder victims, are dangerous with intense resentment. They're fearsome and powerful. Sadako, for example, is like a ghost queen."
Hearing this, Ye Shu had more questions. However, realizing their limited knowledge, he asked, "Is there any way to get rid of the evil ghost around me? I may consider keeping you, but you'll have to help us."
The green-haired ghost hesitated, then admitted, "If what you say is true, brother, you might be haunted by a formidable evil ghost. The more yin energy it absorbs from you, the more powerful it becomes. Eventually, it will devour your flesh and blood."
Ye Shu's face darkened; his daughter was still at home.
"What should we do? We already have an evil ghost at home. It probably won't be afraid of me, or it wouldn't have latched onto you," Ye Shu worried, and Liu Youyou shared his concern.
Green hair considered for a moment and cautiously said, "Brother, if it's true, you might have an evil ghost attached to you. It's powerful, but it's also dangerous. You have to deal with it; otherwise, it might devour you unknowingly."
Startled, Ye Shu pondered the situation. He couldn't allow this unseen danger to harm his family.
"Is there any way to exorcise it? I can offer blood rice as a reward. Just find a way to get rid of it," Ye Shu demanded.
Green hair thought for a while before responding, "Brother, to expel an evil ghost, you need to find an even more formidable one. I can introduce you to one—a rational evil ghost. But you have to keep us as well. You must keep three ghosts."
Ye Shu frowned at the demanding condition. Keeping three ghosts, especially an evil one, sounded dangerous. Besides,
he wasn't sure about the consequences of such an act.
"You're asking too much. We can burn paper money and incense for you, but keeping you is too much. Why don't you go for reincarnation? Let someone else take care of you; why bother us?" Liu Youyou complained. The green-haired ghost remained silent, and the bald one volunteered, "Beautiful lady, reincarnation is impossible for us. In this lifetime, it's not an option. Being evil ghosts isn't easy either. Finding someone to care for us is the only way to sustain our existence. Being in an ash urn is like returning home, much better than reincarnation."
"Enough of your chatter; let me speak," green hair scolded the bald one, then grinned, "Dear brother and sister, to be honest, it's challenging for us ghosts. Most people have sins and face punishment in the afterlife, from descending into hell to spending forty-nine days in the eighteen layers of hell. We, although weak and constantly harassed by powerful ghosts, enjoy freedom. Sometimes, we get lucky, absorbing a bit of yin energy, and when we're unlucky, we sneak a peek at women bathing. It's quite satisfying."
Ye Shu found these ghosts amusing. He chuckled and relaxed, "Here's the deal. Help me find an evil ghost to drive away the current one. I'll offer you blood rice regularly, but I won't keep you. This ghost-keeping art of mine goes against the natural order, and you might lose control in the future."
Ye Shu made a considerable compromise, and after some murmurs between the green-haired and bald ghosts, they reluctantly agreed.
"Alright, let's be friends. Burn some paper money for you on special occasions. Baldy wants to buy adult books in the ghost market."
"Fine, what type of ghost do you want to keep? A mature sister, a loli, a tsundere, a poisonous-tongued one, a mute, or a cute boy?"
