Chapter 45: The Game

David watched from upstairs as events unfolded below.

He couldn't help but fall into contemplation.

Should he let the refugees flood in?

He was all too familiar with the thoughts of those on the brink of starvation.

When people are truly close to starving, no law or morality can restrain them; they dare to trample on everything in this world!

When David himself was almost starved to death, all he thought about was whether he had a nuclear bomb. If he did, he would have detonated it and taken the whole city down with him!

He even considered if there was a bomb that could destroy the Earth, to end it all together!

The feeling of near starvation was just too painful.

Those who still had some food, didn't they also snatch away all his food like rabid dogs?

Of course, not everyone was like that.

There are undoubtedly good people in this world who, even on the verge of starvation, would prioritize giving food to others. These people are like living Buddhas, with a high spiritual realm that David could not reach.

But how many saints like this could there be in the world?

At least those who have survived until now...

They couldn't all be that noble, could they?

Allowing so many refugees in at this moment was definitely not a good thing.

However, it seemed impossible to refuse them. If it really came to opposing the government, Charles didn't have the strength, nor did David.

Charles could think of these things, and David, from a third-party perspective, could think of them too. The arrival of a captain in this weather was enough to show the government's concern.

"David, what do you think?"

Charles had already come outside and spoke softly, "With this move, they'll probably justify the stationing of military personnel here."

If the military was forcefully trying to take their living space, Charles would definitely not agree, and neither would his subordinates.

But with this tactic by the military, his subordinates wouldn't be too inclined to resist.

Who would want to oppose the national military? That would be suicidal!

Unless the other party wanted them dead!

Under these relatively gentle measures, Charles's subordinates would certainly not willingly go to war with the military. After all, they joined Charles for sustenance; they might sell their lives for food, but asking them to die was too much.

"Just let them in," David said indifferently. "As for this place, you can say it's already occupied."

"That's what I was about to discuss," Charles said. "Last time they came, I said no one lived here, but now someone does. What if they want to inspect this room?"

Charles felt this was also one of the things the military wanted to do.

Last time they didn't enter David's room; this time they would surely use the excuse of arranging refugees to inspect it.

Last time there was no one here, but now there is. Wouldn't the military want to check?

"They won't get in," David sneered. "I won't open the door for them. You can say whatever you want about this place. Without my consent, no one else can enter."

"This..." Charles hesitated for a moment, then nodded. "Alright, I'll go arrange it now."

"Mhm."

David returned to his room, not wanting to think about these bothersome issues anymore.

It was truly troublesome. He thought that without those evil neighbors, he could just stay safely in his room during this apocalypse, but it seems he was too optimistic.

David lay on his bed, a cold smile on his lips.

He didn't believe the military would deploy heavy firepower to break down his door.

Right now, to breach his door, they would either need to use missiles or high-powered laser cutting weapons.

The walls were somewhat weaker, but ordinary bombs wouldn't break through either.

If they really intended to attack his home, Charles would never agree.

After all, using such powerful weapons in this already fragile building could cause the entire structure to collapse.

The building was already fragile, having endured two months of extreme cold and then suddenly warming at an astonishing rate of thirty degrees per day. This alternating cold and heat made the building even more dangerous.

If they started demolitions on the seventeenth floor, it would indeed have a huge impact on the entire building, possibly taking down everyone inside.

So, the military wouldn't be so irrational. And even if they really wanted to do it, even if they wanted to disperse everyone in the building to explore the secrets of David's room and decided to destroy the building, Charles would definitely not agree.

In a way, David had now kidnapped everyone in the building.

The only problem now was...

The window.

Yes, the window!

His window had already been pierced by a sniper rifle bullet, proving that its defensive capability was indeed not comparable to the door and walls.

If the military wanted to enter through the glass, it would indeed be troublesome.

But this problem was also solved.

Because it was now past midnight.

"Today's check-in reward: House specific part upgrade*1"

Here it comes!

David sat up from the bed, his eyes shining with excitement, and immediately chose the window.

In an instant, the window was upgraded.

He now had a level three wall, level two door, and level two window, with the defense of the window significantly improved and a new shielding function added. From the inside looking out, there was no difference, but from the outside looking in, nothing could be seen.

Now, if that sniper tried to shoot David again, they wouldn't be able to see his position, and even random shots wouldn't penetrate the window.

With this upgrade, David was much more relaxed.

And the spot previously pierced by the sniper rifle bullet was also repaired. Previously, the outside hot air could enter through the hole, but now with no gaps, the room temperature began to gradually recover.

It was much more comfortable than before!

So, he lay back on the bed, not thinking about anything, and let himself fall asleep.

Meanwhile, outside, Charles was still busy.

Because at almost one o'clock, Henry and the others finally finished arranging refugees in the other seven buildings. In the scorching weather, both the residents and the military personnel were sweating profusely.

They brought the last dozen refugees to the eighth building, where Charles and David resided.
