Chapter 435: Godric Gryffindor

The note indeed contained the prophecy about the savior, albeit modified and abridged by Murphy.

However, Murphy was once again disappointed when the other party glanced at it without any expression, stating, "I do not recall making such a prophecy."

Some seers might enter a trance when making prophecies, unaware of their utterances, like Professor Trelawney, but that's usually due to their insufficient magical power. A wizard of Merlin's caliber wouldn't normally have this issue.

But the prophecy might have been made in the future, or the information left on the note was simply incorrect, not Merlin's prophecy at all.

Moreover, Merlin might not have been truthful to a stranger like himself.

Murphy thought it over and decided not to dwell on this matter any further, instead asking, "Has the great wizard Merlin heard of the name Myrddin?"

Merlin remained expressionless, but Murphy, keenly observing, noticed a slight contraction of his pupils.

He knew Myrddin.

"Never heard of it," Merlin said. "There are many people coming and going in Camelot every day. You might want to ask around in the city."

Although Merlin said this without batting an eye, Murphy knew he was lying.

Yet, he acted as if he hadn't noticed, nodding regretfully, "Well, that's the only option then. Thank you, great wizard Merlin. I shall take my leave."

As soon as Murphy stepped out of Merlin's tower, the latter clapped his hands, summoning a young wizard apprentice from a room nearby, "Merlin, sir, what do you command?"

"Godric, follow that wizard and see what he does in the city. Remember, use the magic I taught you to conceal yourself, do not let him detect you."

"Yes, sir." Named Godric, the apprentice had fiery red hair and looked very young. He took his wand, uttered a spell, cloaking himself in a faint shimmer of light, disappearing from sight, and then followed Murphy.

On the other hand, Murphy had just left the tower when he sent a lightning crow to perch atop a spire, watching Merlin's tower, while he himself took a detour to a deserted alley, waiting.

Godric rushed into the alley. He had lost sight of Murphy entering it, and the alley led to a bustling market on the other side, crowded with people. It would be troublesome to find Murphy if he disappeared from sight.

As he entered the alley, he saw Murphy standing at the end, seemingly waiting for something.

Godric was confident in the invisibility spell Merlin had taught him. He crept closer, intending to see what Murphy was up to, when suddenly Murphy turned around.

In his magical vision, a bright blue silhouette sneakily approached, and even without magical vision, the invisibility wasn't perfect. Moreover, the sound of his footsteps, though he tried to minimize them, didn't escape Murphy's ears.

Without a word, Murphy cast a petrification curse crafted from his "Petrifying Venom" magic on the apprentice.

Caught off guard, Godric was petrified, watching as Murphy approached, dispelling the magic on him.

Murphy then constructed a scene in his mind of using "Total Recall" on himself, but this time applied it to Godric, touching his forehead to open the door to his memories.

Though the magical network was absent, Murphy had used Total Recall on himself many times and knew its workings by heart.

Turning it back on another person, it had a similar effect to extracting memories. In a moment, Murphy had read most of the young wizard's life.

"Godric Gryffindor..." Murphy frowned, "This is quite unexpected."

Gryffindor was Merlin's student!

And now, a thousand years later, Murphy found himself in a strange situation as if he was betraying his own ancestor.

Besides Gryffindor's identity, Murphy gleaned much useful information.

Firstly, Myrddin indeed lived in this era and, like Gryffindor, was Merlin's apprentice and a member of the Knights of Merlin.

However, for some reason, Myrddin had become very strange recently. She had confronted Merlin several times, accusing him of committing a grave sin, and was imprisoned by Merlin. It was said she tried to escape but failed and was still locked in Camelot's dungeons.

The Knights of Merlin had many members, all wizards, tasked with various missions by Merlin. Gryffindor wasn't close to Myrddin; he had heard these things through the grapevine.

Knowing where she was made things simpler for Murphy. He casually cast an invisibility spell on the great ancestor and left him on a rooftop, then teleported back to Merlin's tower.

Merlin had left, and through the lightning crow's perspective, Murphy saw Merlin moving through corridors towards the castle's lower levels.

Murphy followed Merlin as a crow, seeing him descend the intricate staircase to the castle's base, then entering an underground hall leading to a deeper cave.

Merlin stopped at the cave's entrance, turning around, "Who's there!"

Murphy, perched on a rugged stone, remained still, hoping to deceive Merlin, but Merlin, after a pause, commanded, "Show yourself!"

A magical wave made Murphy's disguise unstable for a moment, nearly causing him to fall. Noticing the disturbance, Merlin discovered Murphy, who, no longer hiding, transformed back, "Great wizard Merlin, we meet again."

"Murphy..." Merlin frowned, "Where is Godric?"

Murphy didn't answer, instead asking, "Where is Myrddin?"

Merlin sighed after a pause, "You are indeed that person. Myrddin said someone I couldn't foresee would thwart my plans. You, with an unknown origin, my precognition doesn't work on you..."

Looking at him, Merlin declared, "I cannot allow failure. You shall die here, Murphy."

Murphy frowned. In various texts, Merlin was depicted as a sage, yet here he was, seemingly plotting in the shadows.

But he sensed a familiar magical force in the cave.

As Merlin prepared to act, Murphy sighed.

It didn't matter anymore.

Having dealt with Gryffindor, one more Merlin made no difference.

He raised a finger, and with a crack, a massive bolt of lightning flashed.

Merlin had no chance to cast a spell and collapsed, smoking on the ground.
